Flying high off their most impressive performance of the 2019 season, Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb and the 2-2 Cleveland Browns head west to face the undefeated and well-rested, 3-0 San Francisco 49ers, who are coming off an early bye. While Mayfield and 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will no doubt earn most of the attention in the buildup to Monday night’s clash, the bigger story lies with each club’s suddenly potent running games. Nick Chubb was recognized as the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Week after gashing AFC North rival Baltimore for 165 yards and three touchdowns, including a 88-yard sprint that ranks as the third-longest in team history. Meanwhile, the 49ers quietly lead the NFL with an average of 38 rushes per game, with a three-headed monster of Matt Breida (226 yards, 5.5 yards-per-rush average), Raheem Mostert (202/5.9) and Jeff Wilson (four TDs) leading the attack. Given the battles Odell Beckham, Jr. has created throughout his career, his anticipated one-on-one matchup with longtime standout Richard Sherman might be worth the price of the ticket, itself. Defenses, in fact, could rule this contest. The 49ers rank third in the NFL in yards allowed per game, giving up just 283.3 yards 18.0 points on average in their three wins. Meanwhile, the Browns’ defense has also delivered, especially in the pass-rush department, ranking tied for fourth in the NFL with 14 sacks.
