With Sam Darnold in the lineup, the New York Jets looked like a different team last week. But stacked against the undefeated New England Patriots, the Jets have failed to measure up — for going on a couple of decades. Tom Brady and New England are going for their eighth win in a row in the series. Darnold, the third pick in the 2018 draft, only returned to the field last week after a monthlong bout of mono. His timing oculd be better. The Patriots lead the NFL in total defense and the secondary has been a suffocating bunch. Darnold should find space to go short and wide of the front seven, meaning it could be a big night for running back Le’Veon Bell. In the first meeting of the season in this series, the Patriots faced a crew of backup quarterbacks and Bell found no room to roam. He had 35 yards on 18 carries and the Jets were 0 for 12 on third down. To help slow down Brady, the Jets are hopeful linebacker CJ Mosley can return from a groin injury in the season opener.
