Super Rugby Tipping – Saturday July 4
Highlanders v Crusaders
Venue: Forsyth Barr Stadium | Start: 7:05 PM
Highlanders – The Highlanders seem to be an underrated proposition through three weeks of the NZ Super Rugby. They shocked the Chiefs and then lost to the Blues by three points. Defence continues to be an issue though and it is easy to see them leaking plenty of points against the Crusaders. The Highlanders (27/28 – 96.4%) are the only team in Super Rugby Aotearoa with a lineout success rate above 90%; no team has won fewer on their own throw than the Crusaders (23). The Highlanders’ Aaron Smith (2) and Crusaders’ pair Mitchell Drummond (2) and Sevu Reece (2) are the only players to have made multiple try assists so far in Super Rugby Aotearoa.
Crusaders – The Crusaders haven’t looked overly impressive during Super Rugby Aotearoa to date, but they are still unbeaten and they will start this clash with the Highlanders as clear favourites. The Crusaders have won 7 of their last 8 Super Rugby matches against the Highlanders with an average of 40 points scored each game. They have also won 11 of their last 12 Super rugby matches conceding just 7.2 points per game during that time. Crusaders’ pair Jack Goodhue (22/22) and Whetu Douglas (19/19) have made the most and second most tackles respectively of all players yet to miss a single attempt in Super Rugby Aotearoa. The Crusaders should win this clash comfortably and I don’t think that the line of 10.5 points will be enough.
Super Rugby Tipping – Sunday July 5
Chiefs v Hurricanes
Venue: FMG Stadium Waikato | Start: 1:35 PM
Chiefs – The Chiefs have been playing poorly since the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition restarted and they come into this weeks game on the back of three losses to the Highlanders, Blues and Crusaders. The Chiefs have averaged the most time in possession per game (17min 52sec) of any team in Super Rugby Aotearoa so far; indeed, they have also averaged the fewest missed tackles per game (15.7) of any side in the campaign. They will start this game as favourites but at $1.50 best odds available are they worth the risk?
Hurricanes – The Hurricanes have lost their opening two games of Super Rugby Aotearoa, the last time the Wellington-based side endured a longer losing run was a three-match span from May to June in 2018. That loss looks worse than the game really was and they look to have a team that will be competitive against the Chiefs. The Hurricanes have won 2 of their past four games as away underdogs and they have a decent record against the Chief in recent years. They offer a bit of value with $2.75 (Ladbrokes) for the win.
