WIZARDS VS SUNS

Visa Athletic Center | 6:00am AEST

Washington is down Bradley Beal and without the All-Star guard, the Wizards could be challenged to run with young and athletic opponents — a class of NBA teams that includes the Phoenix Suns. Beal underwent shoulder surgery and Davis Bertans, who opted to sit out the seeding games and focus on his impending free agency. Each team still has something to play for in terms of postseason chances. The Suns (26-39) are six back of Memphis (32-33) in the Western Conference, and the Wizards (24-40) enter Friday 5 1/2 behind Orlando (30-35) in the East.

SPURS VS KINGS

Visa Athletic Center | 10:00am AEST

The Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs are among the 13 Western Conference teams resuming a chase for the NBA playoffs when they square off Friday at the Visa Athletic Center near Orlando, Fla. The race is real in the West, where six teams are within six games of the eighth seed. The Spurs hit the reboot with a record of 27-36, the second-worst record of the Western Conference teams invited to Florida. San Antonio must win games and climb over Portland, New Orleans and Sacramento into ninth place and to within four games of Memphis to force a play-in for the eight spot. Sacramento is a half-game ahead of San Antonio. The Spurs are shorthanded. LaMarcus Aldridge, a seven-time All-Star, had shoulder surgery in April. Center Trey Lyles had an appendectomy two weeks ago and won’t play this week and beyond. The Kings are one of the deepest and youngest teams in the bubble, which could be a big advantage. But Sacramento hasn’t been to the playoffs in 14 years. Sacramento will be without power forward Marvin Bagley III for the rest of the season after he sprained his right foot in practice on July 20. Sacramento is 4-1 against San Antonio since the start of last season but the teams split two games this season.

TRAIL BLAZERS VS GRIZZLIES

The Arena | 6:00am AEST

Probable Rookie of the Year Ja Morant gets a showcase matchup with All-Star Damian Lillard in the resumption of NBA basketball near Orlando. Morant, who said the format of the league restart works against the Memphis Grizzlies, needs to rattle off a series of victories to keep his team in the playoffs. Memphis arrived in Florida as the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference. However, even finishing eighth in the conference won’t assure the Grizzlies their first playoff spot since 2017. The Blazers, 3 1/2 games back of Memphis, must navigate a challeging stretch of three games in five days including a Sunday matinee against the Boston Celtics and a meeting with the Houston Rockets on Tuesday.

BUCKS VS CELTICS

HP Field House | 8:30am AEST

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the frontrunner for NBA MVP, is without one of his trusted sidekicks in point guard Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe arrived at the bubble near Orlando last weekend along with Pat Connaughton, who is also out for the same reason (coronavirus quarantine). Antetokounmpo and the Bucks are in the driver’s seat in the Eastern Conference. But the Boston Celtics have the scoring punch and depth to give Milwaukee a go in a postseason series. Antetokounmpo remains on the fast track toward becoming the NBA’s first back-to-back MVP since Stephen Curry in 2015-16. The 25-year-old averaged a robust 29.6 points, 13.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game this season. He’ll oppose fellow All-Star Kemba Walker on Friday. Walker had 40 points when the teams met in January. Celtics foward Jayson Tatum scored 30 or more points in six of his final eight games before the league was paused in March.

MAVERICKS VS ROCKETS

The Arena | 11:00am AEST

The Mavericks are all but assured a playoff spot but want to improve on their current seventh-place standing. Houston is also firmly in, but the returns on the Rockets’ small-ball lineup are up in the air. Results were mixed since the trade deadline, when GM Daryl Morey unloaded Clint Capela. The Rockets (40-24) and Dallas Mavericks (40-27) resume the season on Friday in a seeding game. Houston is one spot ahead of Dallas in the West. Harden is leading the NBA with 34.4 points per game but depth is not on the Rockets’ side. The rotation will surely change after losing reserve guard Eric Gordon to a left ankle sprain that will sideline him for a minimum of two weeks. Ben McLemore, Jeff Green and Austin Rivers are leading candidates to fill the void. Dallas split a pair of earlier meetings with the Rockets and has proven a challenging matchup courtesy of an offense that ranks first in efficiency at 115.8 points per 100 possessions (just ahead of the second-ranked Rockets) with MVP candidate Luka Doncic at the controls. Improving chemistry with big man Kristaps Porzingis can only enliven expectations for Doncic and the Mavs in August and beyond.

NETS VS MAGIC

HP Field House | 4:30am AEST

The Nets (30-34) are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, a half-game ahead of the Magic (30-35), who are 5 1/2 games ahead of the ninth-place Washington Wizards (24-40).But Brooklyn might struggle to gain a foothold with a roster decimiated by injuries (Kyrie Irving is still out, Kevin Durant won’t return from his season-long Achilles rehab). The coronavirus thinned the ranks as well. Guard Spencer Dinwiddie, forwards Michael Beasley and Taurean Prince and center DeAndre Jordan all tested positive in late June or early July.
