To start us of in Super Rugby Aotearoa Round 8, we have the Chiefs versing the Crusaders. It’s the big guns verses the underdogs, as the Crusaders have won 4/5 matches so far, whilst the Chiefs are 0/6. The Crusaders have the best PD in the competition at +48. Whilst the Chiefs have the worse at -31. The Crusaders lost via a 74th min PG to the Hurricanes last round. But they had won their previous 4 matches before that. And they actually outscored the Hurricanes 4 tries to 3 in the two-point loss as well. As for the Chiefs, they overcame a large deficit last weekend against the Blues last weekend. But it wasn’t enough as they went down 21 points to 17. The Chiefs gout outscored 3 tries to 2. This match is on Saturday, the 1st of August, at 5:05PM.
Then the next match being played is between the Highlanders and the Blues. The Blues have won 4 matches so far and the Highlanders only half of that. But every game in New Zealand is a good game and both sides are on double-digit competition points so far (Blues 17 and Highlanders 10). The Blues nearly let it slip away last round, but they held on to beat the Crusaders at Eden Park, 21 points to 17. The Crusaders played with a hell of a lot of heart, but the Blues were just too classy in the end, as they handed them their first loss of the new season. Whilst the Highlanders last game was a 33-31 victory at FMG Stadium Waikato over the Chiefs. The Highlanders scored 5 tries to 4 and ran for a massive 635m’s. They beat 27 defenders and had 19 clean breaks. You just know this game is bound to be a good one. It’s being played on Sunday, the 2nd of August, at 1:35PM.
Round 8 has two classic games lined up! Let’s bring them on!
Super Rugby Tipping – Saturday August 1
Chiefs vs Crusaders
FMG Stadium Waikato | 5:05PM (AEST)
Chiefs – The Chiefs are having some bad luck at the moment. They currently sit in 5th spot, with 0 wins from 6 games, in the new NZ Rugby season. Not only that, they are on just 5 competition points and have a pretty poor PD of -31. Could things get any worse for them? This game may well sink them even lower. Last round they lost a tightly contested clash to the Blues at Eden Park. They went down 21-17 in a close game of Rugby. They conceded the games opening two tries in the 6th and 13th minutes. But they came back strongly with tries of their own to Boshier in the 19th min and also via Alaimalo in the 46th min. Overall they got outscored 3 tries to 2, but the result had a lot of respectability to it for the Chiefs. The possession was split at 50% each, as they ran for 336m’s, from 122 carries. They also beat 18 defenders and had 10 clean breaks. + They won 7 turnovers and had 23 kicks in play. And they were also victorious in 80 rucks, 7 mauls, 16 lineouts and 7 scrums.
Crusaders – Currently the Crusaders are cruising along as they have won 4 of their 5 games so far this campaign. They are on 19 points and have by far and away the best PD, at +48. But last round at the Orangetheory Stadium, the Hurricanes handed them their first loss of the season. Courtesy of a 74th minute Jordie Barrett PG, they went down 34-32, in what was an absolutely thrilling and high-scoring game of Rugby. Mo’unga scored the first try of the game for the Crusaders in the 16th minute and from there (even before-hand with two PG’s exchanged), it was blow after blow for each side. The Crusaders actually outscored them 4 tries to 3, with 56% possession of the ball. They ran for 592m’s, beat 41 defenders and had 16 clean breaks. They also turned the ball over only 9 times and won 2 themselves. And as well as having 20 kicks in play, they won 87 rucks, 2 mauls, 5 lineouts and 5 scrums. How big will the score-line get here?
The Crusaders will win this one, no doubt about it! They’ve won 4 games so far, whilst the opposition are 0/6! OUCH! And to make matters worse, the Crusaders have won 6 of their last 8 contested games against the Chiefs. Those winning score-lines from newest to oldest have been 18-13, 57-28, 34-20, 45-23, 27-13 and 31-24. There are some pretty hefty score-lines in there. And that is pretty accurate as to what should happen in this clash as well. It was in 2019, RD4, where the Crusaders were victorious 57-28 at the Orangetheory Stadium. That match they scored 9 tries to 4. And they beat 34 defenders, as well as having 19 clean breaks. Expect their attack to be on fire here. And that will very much so be adequately reflected in the ensuing score-line.
