JAZZ VS SPURS

The Field House | 8:30am AEST

The San Antonio Spurs have a must-win situation on their hands when they tip off against the Utah Jazz on Thursday. San Antonio has dealt with plenty of pressure throughout its time in the NBA bubble near Orlando, as its 22-season playoff streak has been in jeopardy. The Spurs enter the day a half-game behind the Portland Trail Blazers for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference standings. They are tied with the Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns as all of the teams mentioned try to lock up the No. 8 seed for a playoff date against the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers. A loss on Thursday will end the Spurs’ season, and a win will not necessarily guarantee more breathing room. San Antonio recently has been led by rookie guard Keldon Johnson, who had career-best totals of 24 points and 11 boards in a win against the Houston Rockets. Meanwhile, Utah already has locked up a playoff spot and likely will not need to compete with the same sense of urgency as the Spurs. The Jazz sit in sixth place in the conference and are lined up for a playoff date with the third-place Denver Nuggets. Look for Utah to provide extra rest to some of its veterans as its bench players receive extra playing time.

SUNS VS MAVERICKS

AdventHealth Arena | 6:00am AEST

The Phoenix Suns will look to cap off an unlikely — and unforgettable — run in the seeding games when they face the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA bubble near Orlando on Thursday. Phoenix is 7-0 since the league resumed action, and it has a chance to be the only team to finish play at 8-0 heading into the playoffs. It has been a remarkable run that has grabbed the attention of the basketball world and thrust the Suns ahead in the standings, although it might not be enough. Heading into Thursday, Phoenix sits in a three-way tie for the Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs. All three teams are a half-game behind the eighth-place Portland Trail Blazers, and all three are vying for a spot in a play-in game that will determine who faces the Los Angeles Lakers in Round 1. Maybe it will not matter much in the grand scheme of things, but the Suns’ young core could benefit from valuable playoff experience, not to mention the momentum heading into next season if they are able to finish 8-0 in Florida. Phoenix is led by point guard Devin Booker and big man Deandre Ayton, while Dallas likely will get extra rest for key players such as Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. The Mavericks own the No. 7 seed and are slated for a first-round date with the second-place Los Angeles Clippers.

MAGIC VS PELICANS

Visa Athletic Center | 11:00am AEST

Player development will be the theme of the day when the Orlando Magic face the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday in the NBA bubble near Orlando. The game’s outcome will not matter in terms of the standings heading into the postseason. Orlando already has locked up the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference and is set to play the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks. Meanwhile, New Orleans is out of the mix in the Western Conference, losers of two straight and 30-41 overall. Orlando already has ruled out a slew of players including Aaron Gordon, Evan Fournier and Michael Carter-Williams. New Orleans will wait to distribute its inactive list, but the Pelicans almost certainly will use this game to shine a light on some of its younger players with an eye toward the 2020-21 campaign. New Orleans has high hopes for a bounce-back season next year if Zion Williamson is able to stay healthy, and Thursday’s game provides a chance for the franchise to put a feel-good ending on an up-and-down season.

GRIZZLIES VS BUCKS

Visa Athletic Center | 6:00am AEST

While much of the league uses the final couple days of the NBA seeding games to rest and recuperate, the Memphis Grizzlies face a high-stakes circumstance. They need to win against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday to preserve their chances of taking part in a play-in game for the eighth and final seed in the Western Conference standings. Memphis could have made this task much easier by playing better at the start of the competition near Orlando, but they sputtered out of the gate and eventually dropepd a half-game behind the Portland Trail Blazers. On Thursday afternoon, the Grizzlies can nudge back in front of the eighth-place Trail Blazers with a win against the NBA’s top team. On a typical game day, the Bucks would be favored heavily, but that might not be the case Thursday because Milwaukee’s main motivation will be to keep its players healthy. The Bucks have locked up the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, and nothing about Thursday’s outcome will change that. Will they approach this game as an important final tune-up and a chance to spoil Memphis’ season? Or will they coast, knowing that a much more important objective lies ahead?

LAKERS VS KINGS

The Field House | 3:30am AEST

LeBron James is listed as probable to play when the Los Angeles Lakers tip off against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday in the NBA bubble near Orlando. James has been dealing with a groin issue, and regardless of whether he takes the court against Sacramento, it would be a surprise if he logs heavy minutes. That is because Los Angeles already has secured the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs, and its final game against the Kings is merely a tune-up heading into a first-round date against an opponent still to be determined. James’ top teammate, power forward Anthony Davis, is listed as questionable because of a sore right knee. Two other players also landed on the injury report — Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Alex Caruso, both of whom have been ruled out against the Kings. As for Sacramento, the team has been eliminated from playoff contention but could try to go out on a victory over its in-state rivals. The Kings most recently were led by Harrison Barnes, who had 25 points and eight rebounds in a victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

NETS VS TRAIL BLAZERS

AdventHealth Arena | 11:00am AEST

All eyes will be on Damian Lillard when the Portland Trail Blazers face the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday in the NBA bubble near Orlando. Lillard has had nothing short of a tremendous performance since the NBA restarted play in late July after a four-month hiatus. He seems to keep getting better, as proved by his latest game in which he dropped 61 points in a win over the Dallas Mavericks. The victory helped Portland seize the eighth spot in the Western Conference standings, and it could secure a date in Saturday’s play-in game with a win over Brooklyn. Nothing is promised, however, not even against a Nets team that has little motivation (on paper) to compete because it already has locked up the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn will face second-place Toronto in the first round of the playoffs. No disrespect to the Raptors, but Lillard will be the best individual player that Brooklyn sees for a while. Can they keep him from scoring 30-plus? What about 40-plus? Or more?

CELTICS VS WIZARDS

AdventHealth Arena | 2:00am AEST

The Washington Wizards have played seven games in the NBA bubble near Orlando, and they have lost each and every one of them. Now comes the Wizards’ final chance for a victory when they face the Boston Celtics on Thursday in the final contest before the playoffs begin. Washington will not move on to the playoffs, and it has struggled mightily without top player Bradley Beal in the fold in Florida. The Celtics have locked up third place in the Eastern Conference standings and clearly are the more talented team, but Thursday’s game could be fun and unpredictable because both sides could focus on player development above all else. Boston carries a 48-23 record into the game, while Washington languishes far behind at 24-47. Boston has won four in a row while Washington has dropped seven straight.
