CHIEFS VS TEXANS
Arrowhead Stadium | 10:20am (AEST)
Patrick Mahomes hits the field as the richest player in the NFL with a new $503 million deal over the next 10 years, and arguably no quarterback has more talent around him, either. The Chiefs subtracted guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (COVID-19 opt out) but otherwise bring back their Super Bowl offense with one massive addition — rookie first-rounder Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a new-school version of former Eagles running back Brian Westbrook. Some teams rated Helaire highly as a slot receiver and third-down back, and the challenges covering him are immense while speed demon Tyreek Hill and elite tight end Travis Kelce are also on the field. Mahomes lit up the Texans without much perspiration after sweating out a 24-0 deficit in their January playoff game. The Texans had no answer for Kelce and Mahomes faced little pressure in the second half of the historic comeback. If the Chiefs have a worrisome weakness, it would be cornerback depth. They’ll take the field Thursday night in the NFL season opener without Breshad Breeland (suspension) and serious concerns about who lines up in the slot. Mahomes isn’t the only quarterback who struck it rich in the offseason. Deshaun Watson got a massive payday last week ($156 million over four years) but there is definitely less certainty about where he might go with the ball in Week 1. The Texans have new starters all around. David Johnson was added at running back in the trade that sent All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals. Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks, Kenny Stills and Randall Cobb are the top wide receiver options for Watson, who has no sure thing at tight end, either. Fuller is the closest the team has to a lead receiver, especially with Cooks fighting a muscle pull. He’s questionable for Week 1. Spreading the field could be the ticket to the upset for the under Texans. Kansas City isn’t deep at cornerback and safety Tyrann Mathieu could wind up covering like a cornerback. That opens up Johnson, who is also a polished wide receiver. Watson was under plenty of duress last season and took multiple big hits against the Chiefs in the January playoff loss.
