LAKERS VS HEAT

AdventHealth Arena | 11:00am AEST

Miami is a massive underdog in the NBA Finals where the Heat franchise faces LeBron James, the MVP the last time Erik Spoelstra took a team to the championship series. James and the Lakers are favored to make relatively quick work of the Heat but Miami brings confidence, swagger and depth with role players to help Spoelstra match up with James and All-Star big man Anthony Davis. The Heat feature four players who hit for at least 20 points in a game in the Eastern Conference finals series with the Boston Celtics — Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic. Los Angeles is centered around James and Davis, who combined for 61 points and 19 rebounds in the most recent meeting between the teams in December 2019. In addition to James, Lakers reserve guard Dion Waters is a former member of the Heat franchise. There are plenty of subplots to go around. The Lakers pursued Butler in free agency, which head coach Frank Vogel confirmed, to be part of the James-Davis alliance. But Miami went big behind team president Pat Riley, who challenged James for not having the “guts” to stay in Miami after the 2014. Instead, James went to Cleveland, won a title in 2016 and now aims to win a championship with a third franchise. One interesting X-factor acquired by Riley at the trade deadline is Andre Iguodala. Beyond his championship credentials, Iguodala has a history of strong defensive performances against James. They’ve met in the Finals before, when Iguodala was a member of the Golden State Warriors and James with the Cavaliers.
