Memphis Grizzlies v Boston Celtics

The Celtics bid for their 10th straight victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday when the teams meet in Boston. The Celtics snapped a modest two-game skid and avenged a loss to Indiana on Sunday by posting a 116-111 victory over the Pacers two nights later. Jayson Tatum combined for 52 points and 22 rebounds in those contests and had 52 and 13, respectively, in Boston’s two-game season sweep of Memphis in 2019-20. Jaylen Brown, who is averaging 24.5 points this season, struggled in his lone encounter with the Grizzlies in 2019-20 — making just 3 of 13 shots for seven points in the Celtics’ 122-107 win. While Memphis also emerged victorious in its last game, the Grizzlies exited their 116-111 overtime win over the Brooklyn Nets with a lump in their throat after Ja Morant sustained a Grade 2 ankle sprain. The injury will sideline the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year for three to five weeks. Kyle Anderson had a career-high 28 points and Brooks added 24 for the Grizzlies, who are already without Jaren Jackson Jr. (knee) and Justise Winslow (hip). Jonas Valanciunas recorded his third straight double-double on Monday and averaged 15.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games versus Boston last season.

Atlanta Hawks v Brooklyn Nets

The Atlanta Hawks and Brooklyn Nets are two teams attempting to reshape the Eastern Conference playoff picture this season. So far, Atlanta is doing the better job as the clubs prepare for a three-night, two-game sequence. Led by Trae Young (34.0 points per game), the Hawks have opened with wins over the Bulls, Grizzlies and Pistons by a total of 38 points. Newcomers Bogdan Bogdanovic and Danilo Gallinari also have contributed, with Bogdanovic hitting five 3-pointers and totaling 17 points in Monday’s 128-120 win over Detroit, while Gallinari debuted for the Hawks with a splashy plus-31 plus/minus in 24 minutes on Opening Night against Chicago. Gallinari suffered a bruised foot in the win and remains questionable for Wednesday. The Nets are coming off consecutive losses, but had an excuse in the second as Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant were rested on the second night of a back-to-back. Getting 28 points from Caris LeVert, Brooklyn lost that game 116-111 in overtime to Memphis on Monday, one night after dropping a 106-104 decision at Charlotte. The budding Irving-Young rivalry has been one-sided so far, with Irving’s teams (Boston in 2018-19, Brooklyn last season) going 5-0 in their head-to-heads, with Irving outscoring Young in four of the matchups.

Milwaukee Bucks v Miami Heat

The Miami Heat will go for a do-over when they tip off against the visiting Milwaukee Bucks for the second time in as many nights Wednesday. Miami is coming off an embarrassing 144-97 shellacking by the Bucks on Tuesday. Milwaukee set an NBA record with 29 3-pointers, including at least one 3-pointer by a dozen different players. The only active player for the Bucks who did not drain a shot from beyond the arc was Giannis Antetokounmpo, who finished with nine points. Miami got 23 points from Tyler Herro but played without star forward Jimmy Butler, who sat out because of a sprained right ankle. Now the Heat will try to avoid falling two games under .500 in the season’s early going. The teams met three times during the regular season last year, with the Heat winning two of those contests. The rivalry picked up again in the playoffs, as Miami won four of five games to send Milwaukee to an unexpected early exit. That history could help explain the Bucks’ 47-point victory on Tuesday, and it stands to reason that the Bucks will remain angry (and motivated) when they return to the same venue to face the Heat.

Charlotte Hornets v Dallas Mavericks

Coming off his strongest performance since joining Charlotte in the offseason, Gordon Hayward again will aim to lead the Hornets Wednesday as they visit the Dallas Mavericks to open a stretch of playing five of six on the road. Hayward had 28 points on 12-of-20 shooting while adding seven assists and six rebounds to lift Charlotte to a 106-104 home win against Brooklyn on Sunday. Terry Rozier scored 19 points and P.J. Washington notched a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Washington suffered a sprained ankle in the closing seconds, but he practiced Tuesday. The Mavericks closed a season-opening three-game road trip with Sunday’s 124-73 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers. Luka Doncic scored 24 points and narrowly missed a triple-double, adding nine rebounds and eight assists. The Mavericks shot 49.4 percent and drilled 14 3-pointers while surging to a 50-point lead at halftime, the largest in league history since the shot clock era began in 1954-55. Doncic has a triple-double in two straight games against Charlotte. Dallas leads the all-time series 40-19, including a 21-9 mark at home. The teams split their two meetings a season ago, and the road team has prevailed in eight of the past 10 matchups.

Los Angeles Lakers v San Antonio Spurs

In the first game of a back-to-back scenario that will stretch into the new year, the Los Angeles Lakers will hit the road for the first time to face the San Antonio Spurs. After a sluggish start to the new season, with two defeats in four games, the Lakers can close out their memorable calendar year on a positive note with a victory. Los Angeles will enter off a 115-107 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday as Anthony Davis returned from a calf injury after missing one contest. LeBron James scored 29 points after he was listed as questionable with a left ankle injury. Dennis Schroder continued to impress in Los Angeles with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting. After defeating both the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors to start the season, the Spurs also will enter off a defeat — a 98-95 setback against the New Orleans Pelicans. DeMar DeRozan scored just eight points and his late 3-point attempt to tie the game was blocked from behind. DeRozan did have 10 assists. Rudy Gay scored a team-high 22 points off the bench, while Lonnie Walker IV had 16. The Lakers were 3-0 against the Spurs last season after San Antonio had a 3-1 advantage in 2018-19.

Portland Trail Blazers v Los Angeles Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers put a horrific result in the background and now seek their second straight win when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday. One game after trailing by an NBA-record 50 points at halftime en route to losing by a franchise-worst 51 points to the Dallas Mavericks, it was the Clippers with a 20-point halftime lead while cruising to a 124-101 win over the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves Tuesday. Kawhi Leonard (mouth laceration) has missed the past two games and coach Tyronn Lue said he is not sure when his star forward will get his eight stitches removed. Lou Williams scored 20 points as one of seven Los Angeles players in double digits. The Clippers won all three meetings last season with Portland, which is coming off a solid 115-107 road win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Damian Lillard performed his usual starring role with 31 points but the difference-maker was reserve Gary Trent Jr., who matched his career high of seven 3-pointers while scoring 28 points. CJ McCollum registered 20 points and 11 assists. Carmelo Anthony joined the team in Los Angeles on Tuesday and will likely see action. He was out against the Lakers due to the NBA’s COVID-19 safety protocol.
