Cleveland Cavaliers v Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers bid to rebound from their respective first losses of the season when they meet in Indianapolis on Thursday night. Victor Oladipo followed up consecutive 22-point performances with 24 on Tuesday, but the Pacers saw a 17-point lead go by the boards in a 116-111 setback to Boston. Oladipo scored 19 points to help Indiana post a 113-104 victory over Cleveland on Feb. 29. The win gave the Pacers a 2-1 edge in the regular-season series. Malcolm Brogdon erupted for 30 points and 10 assists in Indiana’s 110-99 loss to the Cavaliers in the first meeting and added 25 and 13, respectively, in a 102-95 win in the second. Cleveland looks to regain its footing following a 95-86 setback to the New York Knicks on Tuesday. Andre Drummond recorded his fourth-double-double of the season with 18 points and 17 rebounds in that contest and had 27 and 13, respectively, in the final encounter against Indiana last season. Collin Sexton, who had 20 points on Tuesday, leads the Cavaliers by averaging 25.2 points per game. Cleveland will be without five-time All-Star Kevin Love, who is out three-to-four weeks with a calf injury.

Chicago Bulls v Washington Wizards

After defeating the host Washington Wizards 115-107 on Tuesday to earn their first victory of the season, the Chicago Bulls will look to duplicate the feat while keeping the Wizards winless when the teams meet in Washington again on Thursday afternoon. The Wizards have dropped each of their four games and are off to the franchise’s worst start since the 2012-13 team opened 0-12. Offseason acquisition Russell Westbrook has notched a triple-double in each of his three appearances for the Wizards, contributing 21 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists Tuesday. Bradley Beal paced Washington with 29 points while navigating concussion concerns. Beal has scored at least 20 points in 27 consecutive games dating to last season, the longest active stretch in the NBA. Seven Bulls finished in double figures Tuesday, led by Zach LaVine (23 points) and Coby White (18). Lauri Markkanen nearly joined the group, but left with an aggravated left calf contusion in the third quarter after contributing nine points. Thaddeus Young did not play against Washington despite being available. Young missed the Bulls’ first three games while recovering from an infection in his lower left leg. Chicago has won four of five in the series, with each victory coming by single digits.

Philadelphia 76ers v Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic will look to continue their incredible start when they host the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night. Orlando (4-0) is unbeaten and sits atop the Eastern Conference standings after posting wins over the Miami Heat, Washington Wizards (twice) and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Magic’s biggest win has come by 11 points and its smallest win has come by six points. Philadelphia (3-1) also is off to a promising start and undoubtedly will try to knock Orlando off its perch as the best team in the conference. The 76ers’ lone loss has been against the Cleveland Cavaliers, while the team has held on for wins against the Wizards, New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors. Joel Embiid is off to a fantastic start for Philadelphia with averages of 28.3 points and 13.3 rebounds to start the season. Tobias Harris has been as steady as ever for the 76ers, and he ranks second on the team with 17.3 points per game on 45.6 percent shooting. Orlando has a great big man in Nikola Vucevic, who will try to slow Embiid while building upon his averages of 20 points and 11.5 boards. Magic guard Markelle Fultz (18.3 points per game) will try to sting his former team.

Sacramento Kings v Houston Rockets

The Rockets (0-2) finally get an opportunity to display their new look Thursday when they tip off a three-day, two-game set at home against Sacramento. After having had their opener against Oklahoma City postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Rockets then played short-handed in losses at Portland and Denver, with Eric Gordon and key newcomers John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins forced to sit out. All hands are expected on deck for the Kings series, which should take a burden off James Harden and Christian Wood, who have combined to average 66.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 14.5 assists in the two losses. The Kings (3-1) will be playing their second same-opponent sequence of the season, having split at home with Phoenix last weekend, winning 106-103 before getting thumped 116-110 in the rematch. Sacramento’s other two games have been against Denver, and the Kings have taken care of business there, winning in overtime on the road in the opener and then 125-115 at home on Tuesday. Impressive rookie Tyrese Haliburton has had near-mirror-image performances in his last two games, shooting 5-for-7 overall and 3-for-4 on 3-pointers in each, and recording six assists both times. He had 15 points against the Suns, then 13 against the Nuggets.

New York Knicks v Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors will again seek their elusive first victory of the season when they host the New York Knicks on Thursday at Tampa, Fla. The good news for Toronto is that it has won eight straight games and 16 of the past 17 versus the Knicks. However, the Raptors have allowed an average of 110.7 points per game while losing their first three contests of this season. Additionally, the club’s top three scorers in Kyle Lowry (19.3 points per game), Pascal Siakam (18.7) and Fred VanVleet (14.7) all are struggling with their shots. Lowry has made 42.2 percent of his field-goal attempts, Siakam is at 39.3 and VanVleet is at 36.4. New York has split its first four games and the play of Julius Randle has stood out. Randle had 28 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in Tuesday’s 95-86 road victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers for his seventh career triple-double. He has scored at least 25 points in three straight games and leads the Knicks with averages of 24.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists. Alec Burks, who averaged 20.7 points off the bench over the first three games, is questionable after missing the Cleveland contest. Frank Ntilikina (knee) will sit out after being hurt Tuesday.

New Orleans Pelicans v Oklahoma City Thunder

Steven Adams plays against his former organization for the first time when the New Orleans Pelicans visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night. Adams spent his first seven NBA seasons with the Thunder and scored in double digits in each of the past four before being traded to New Orleans in the offseason. Adams is averaging 8.3 points and 8.5 rebounds in his first four games for the Pelicans, who are 2-2. All-Star forward Brandon Ingram is averaging a team-best 23.3 points and second-year pro Zion Williamson is contributing 21.3 points and 9.3 rebounds. Oklahoma City went 4-0 against the Pelicans last season but is a vastly different team after trading key players Chris Paul, Danilo Gallinari, Dennis Schroder and Adams in the offseason. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is now the team’s top player and he is averaging 23.7 points and 7.7 assists. Veteran George Hill (neck) will be back in the lineup after missing Tuesday’s 118-107 loss to the Orlando Magic. Veteran Al Horford (rest) will also return. Luguentz Dort, who made a strong impression on team brass last season, has scored at least 15 points in each game and is averaging 18.7 points. Dort has made eight 3-pointers over the past two games.

Phoenix Suns v Utah Jazz

After an impressive start to the season, the Phoenix Suns will now head for the mountains to first play a New Year’s Eve contest against the host Utah Jazz. The Suns improved to 3-1 for the first time since 2014 with an easy 111-86 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday. Devin Booker (eight points) and Chris Paul (nine points) took a back seat, while Phoenix still had six players in double figures led by Jae Crowder, who scored a season-high 21. Phoenix’s Dario Saric, playing in his first game after recovering from a quad injury, had 10. Booker’s streak of games with at least 20 points, going back to February, ended at 17. Phoenix will then have to turn around to play a New Year’s Day game at Denver. The Jazz will enter off a tight 110-109 victory at Oklahoma City on Monday. Donovan Mitchell had the go-ahead layup with seven seconds remaining, finishing with 20 points. Bogdan Bogdanovic had 23 points, while Mike Conley also had 20 with 10 rebounds and nine assists. Utah’s Rudy Gobert has scored 16.7 points per game with 14.7 rebounds after signing a five-year, $205 million extension. The Jazz have one more home game Friday before going on a seven-game trip.
