Memphis Grizzlies v Charlotte Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets bid for their third straight victory on Friday night when they host the Memphis Grizzlies. The Hornets answered back-to-back losses to begin the season by edging the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday before posting a 118-99 win over the Dallas Mavericks three nights later. Rookie LaMelo Ball looks to follow up his best game in the pros, as he made 7 of 10 shots from the floor — including 4 of 5 from 3-point range — while scoring 22 points against the Mavericks. Miles Bridges added 20 as the Hornets’ bench accounted for 60 of the team’s points on Wednesday. Starter Terry Rozier, who had 18 points versus Dallas, erupted for 33 points in a 119-117 loss to Memphis on Nov. 13, 2019. Ja Morant scored the winning shot in that encounter versus the Hornets, however the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year is expected to miss three to five weeks with an ankle injury. The Grizzlies fell flat in their first game without Morant, dropping a 126-107 decision to Boston on Wednesday. To add injury to insult, Grayson Allen is doubtful with a left ankle sprain after sustaining the injury in the first half against the Celtics.

Boston Celtics v Detroit Pistons

The Celtics (3-2) will play an opponent in consecutive games for the second time already this season when they visit the Pistons (0-4) for a pair beginning Friday night in Detroit. The Eastern Conference clubs will meet again on Sunday. Boston split its initial “doubleheader,” winning the rematch with the Pacers. That victory, coupled with Wednesday’s 126-107 thumping of the Grizzlies, gives Boston a two-game winning streak. Jaylen Brown has been the club’s leading scorer, with 33- and 42-point bookends to five straight outings with 18 or more points. The Celtics have shot 50 percent or better in three straight games. The Pistons appeared on their way to their first win of the season Tuesday against Golden State, leading by as many as 12 points in the first half before Blake Griffin got inadvertently hit in the face by a James Wiseman forearm. He left the game for good, the Warriors rallied for a 116-106 win, and Griffin is slated to miss Friday’s game due to concussion protocol. Newcomer Jerami Grant enters the series on quite a roll, having totaled 10 3-pointers in his last three games while scoring 28, 27 and 27 points. The Celtics haven’t played at Detroit since December of 2018, a game they lost 113-104.

Miami Heat v Dallas Mavericks

The Miami Heat (2-2) will go for back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they visit the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. Miami is coming off a 119-108 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday — one night after the Heat suffered a 47-point loss to the same opponent. The Heat have been without star forward Jimmy Butler for each of the past two games because of an ankle injury, and he is listed as probable against the Mavericks. Without Butler, the Heat have received a boost from second-year guard Tyler Herro, who is averaging 22 points, nine rebounds and 5.5 assists over his last two contests. Dallas (1-3) is off to a slow start and will look to bounce back from a 118-99 loss against the Charlotte Hornets in its most recent game. The Mavericks are led by superstar guard Luka Doncic, still only 21 years old, who is averaging 23.8 points to go along with 6.3 assists and 5.8 boards per game. Tim Hardaway (14.5 points per game) also provides scoring punch in the backcourt, but the Mavericks have struggled to find consistency in the low post. Miami went 2-0 against Dallas last season, with one win in regulation and one in overtime.

Atlanta Hawks v Brooklyn Nets

The Atlanta Hawks aim to rebound from their first loss of the season on Friday when they visit the Brooklyn Nets for the second time in three days. The Hawks fell short despite recording their highest scoring output of the season in a 145-141 setback on Wednesday. Trae Young recorded 30 points and 11 assists and John Collins had 30 points and 10 rebounds, respectively, for Atlanta. Young is no stranger to having big games against the Nets, most notably a 39-point, 10-assist performance in a 130-118 setback last season. The Hawks lost three of four meetings with Brooklyn in 2019-20 and 12 of their last 14 encounters overall. Atlanta would be wise to focus its attention on Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Durant collected 33 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists on Wednesday while Irving overcame a sluggish start to score 17 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter. The two stars are averaging 28.3 points per game this season for the Nets, who snapped a two-game skid following their highest offensive output of the season. Irving made 10 of 11 shots from the floor to finish with 21 points in his lone encounter with the Hawks last season.

Chicago Bulls v Milwaukee Bucks

After sweeping the Washington Wizards in a back-to-back series, the Chicago Bulls will look to close a three-game road trip with a third successive victory as they visit the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night. In defeating Washington 115-107 on Tuesday and 133-130 on Thursday, the Bulls displayed their depth by placing seven scorers in double figures in both games. Otto Porter Jr. (28 points, 12 rebounds) and Coby White (16 points, 10 assists) both registered double-doubles on Thursday, helping fill the void as Ryan Arcidiacano, Chandler Hutchison, Lauri Markkanen and Tomas Satoransky each missed the game because of the NBA’s health and safety protocols. Milwaukee is slated to start a five-game homestand after playing only one of its first five games at home. The Bucks are coming off a back-to-back split at Miami, losing Wednesday’s finale against the Heat 119-108 after failing to hold a 14-point, third-quarter lead. Giannis Antetokounmpo notched a triple-double of 26 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists to keep the Bucks afloat despite the team’s 16-for-41 3-point shooting, one game after Milwaukee made an NBA-record 29 treys. Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton were a combined 7-for-30 with 21 points Wednesday. The Bucks average 124.2 points per game compared to 113.3 for the Bulls.

Washington Wizards v Minnesota Timberwolves

The Washington Wizards continue the search for their elusive first victory of the season on Friday when they open a four-game road trip against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis. Washington’s Bradley Beal has done his part by either earning top honors or sharing the team lead in points in all five games this season. Beal, who matched Thomas Bryant with 28 points in a 133-130 setback to Chicago on Thursday, averaged 37 points to help the Wizards split a pair of meetings with the Timberwolves last season. The back-to-back set means the Wizards likely will be without Russell Westbrook, who collected 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds on Thursday to join Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson as the lone players in NBA history to open a season with four triple-doubles in the first four games. Minnesota star Karl-Anthony Towns will miss his third straight game due to a dislocated left wrist. The Timberwolves struggled in the previous two contests, dropping lopsided decisions to the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers. D’Angelo Russell scored 22 points and Malik Beasley added 19 in a 124-101 loss on Tuesday. Ricky Rubio scored 17 points against the Clippers after mustering a total of 21 over his previous three games.

Los Angeles Lakers v San Antonio Spurs

The Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs will run it back Friday, playing at San Antonio for the second time in three days. The Lakers earned a 121-107 victory Wednesday, in a game that made history when San Antonio’s Becky Hammon became the first woman to take over head coaching duties after Gregg Popovich was ejected. Hammon, a longtime Spurs assistant coach, called the big-picture aspect of the occasion “overwhelming.” Lakers star LeBron James led the victory with 26 points, eight assists and five rebounds on his 36th birthday. James referred to Hammon’s historic moment as “a beautiful thing.” The champion Lakers are just 3-2 to open their title defense, but all three victories have come by at least 14 points. Anthony Davis had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, while new point guard Dennis Schroder continues to sparkle with 21 points. Wesley Matthews hit all six of his 3-point attempts for Los Angeles. The Spurs’ Dejounte Murray had a career-best 29 points to go along with seven assists and seven rebounds in the loss. DeMar DeRozan had 23 points for the Spurs to rebound from an eight-point performance Sunday, while forward LaMarcus Aldridge missed the game with a left knee injury and is questionable.

Phoenix Suns v Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets expect to have Jamal Murray back in the lineup Friday night when they host the Suns on Friday. Denver wasted Nikola Jokic’s third triple-double of the young season in a 125-115 loss at Sacramento on Tuesday, a game that Murray sat out due to a bruised right elbow. The explosive guard had 27, 22, 28 and 36 points in four games against the Suns last season. Jokic had a pair of triple-doubles against the Suns last year, and in the only New Year’s Day appearance of his career, he logged another against the New York Knicks in 2019. The Suns will be playing the second night of a rough Utah/Denver road back-to-back, but they opened with a 106-95 win over the Jazz. While Chris Paul and Devin Booker get most of the headlines, backups played a key role again in the win at Utah, with Cameron Johnson and Cameron Payne scoring 10 points apiece. The Phoenix bench has recorded a cumulative plus-24 plus/minus this season, third-best in the NBA behind Orlando and Milwaukee. Booker shot just 19-for-62 (30.6 percent) and was outscored by Murray in each head-to-head meeting when the Suns were swept in the season series by the Nuggets last year.

Los Angeles Clippers v Utah Jazz

The rejuvenated Los Angeles Clippers (4-1) hope to catch a tired opponent on the second night of a back-to-back when they visit the Utah Jazz (2-2) on Friday night. Los Angeles has rebounded impressively from its 51-points loss at the hands of Dallas on Sunday, venting its frustration first on Minnesota and then on Portland in a pair of 23-point shellackings. The same team that couldn’t shoot straight against the Mavericks (34.2 percent overall, 12.1 percent on 3-point attempts) all of a sudden can’t miss, shooting 53.4 percent overall and 51.6 percent from long range against the Timberwolves, then 49.5 percent overall and 47.4 percent on treys against the Trail Blazers. Paul George has led the inspired play, totaling 41 points in the two wins, with a majority of the scoring coming on eight 3-pointers. The Jazz were buried in a sea of threes in a 106-95 loss to the Phoenix Suns on New Year’s Eve in Salt Lake City. Utah’s starting forward tandem of Bojan Bogdanovic (three points) and Royce O’Neale (eight) was outscored 32-11 by its Phoenix counterparts in the defeat. Utah has lost both its home games this season, never leading at any point in the second half.

Portland Trail Blazers v Golden State Warriors

The Trail Blazers (2-2) and Warriors (2-2) will each participate in their first same-opponent, same-site, different-day sequence when they duel Friday and Sunday in San Francisco. The Trail Blazers are coming off consecutive games at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but against different opponents as they beat the Lakers 115-107 on Monday before losing to the Clippers 128-105 on Wednesday. CJ McCollum has outplayed Damian Lillard so far, outscoring his backcourt mate 28.0 points per game to 23.0 and outshooting him on 3-pointers 47.8 percent to 28.9. Carmelo Anthony made his season debut against the Clippers after having COVID-19 issues. He led all Portland reserves in scoring with 15 points in 25 minutes. The Warriors have won two in a row (after an 0-2 start) as they prepare for their first home game of the season. Stephen Curry has been a barometer for the Warriors’ success so far. He shot poorly (4-for-20 on threes) in losses at Brooklyn and Milwaukee, before heating up (10-for-24 on threes) in wins at Chicago and Detroit. Injured much of last season, Curry isn’t even the current record-holder for points at his new home arena — that honor belongs to Lillard, who had 39 in his first visit last November.
