Boston Celtics v Detroit Pistons

The Pistons aim to defeat the Boston Celtics for the second time in three days when the teams meet in Detroit on Sunday afternoon. Jerami Grant scored 18 of his 24 points in the first half as the Pistons recorded their first win of the season with a 96-93 victory on Friday night. Grant is off to a sterling start to the campaign after signing a three-year, $60 million deal. He is averaging a team-leading 23.0 points to go along with 5.6 rebounds. Derrick Rose made 7 of 12 shots on Friday to join rookie Saddiq Bey with 17 points. Boston will look to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in its bid to even its record through the first two contests of a four-game road trip. Tatum had 28 points and Brown added 25 on Friday for the Celtics, who saw a late five-point lead go by the boards after failing to score in the final 4:15 of the game. Brown averages a team-best 27.5 points and Tatum is second with 24.3. Marcus Smart, who had 13 points and nine assists on Friday, is the only other player scoring in double figures for the Celtics. He is averaging 11.8 points.

Washington Wizards v Brooklyn Nets

The Washington Wizards hope to continue to prove they are a better team on the road than at home when they visit the Nets in Brooklyn on Sunday. Washington snapped a four-game losing streak — all at home — with a 130-109 romp at Minnesota to tip off a four-game trip on Friday. The Wizards’ only other road game this season resulted in a narrow 113-107 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Washington scorched the nets for 55.1 percent shooting overall and 16-for-33 (48.5 percent) on 3-pointers, both season-highs, in Minnesota. Eight Wizards, including rookie Deni Avdija, scored in double figures in a balanced attack against the Timberwolves. Avdija had a season-best 11 points while also finding time for seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. The Nets have lost three of four, including two of three to open a six-game homestand. Kevin Durant continued his fast start with 28 or more points in a fourth straight game when Brooklyn lost at home to the Hawks on Friday. Durant (28.2) and Washington’s Bradley Beal (31.2) both rank among the league’s top scorers in the early going. Brooklyn has given up 116, 141 and 114 points in its last three games, an average of 123.7.

Los Angeles Lakers v Memphis Grizzlies

It will be a back-to-back after their back-to-back for the Los Angeles Lakers, who will head to Memphis for a pair of games against the Grizzlies after playing a pair at San Antonio. The Lakers dispatched the Spurs before and after the new year to get a 115-107 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers on Dec. 28 out of their system. LeBron James led the Lakers with 26 points in a 121-107 victory over the Spurs on Dec. 30, while Anthony Davis had 34 points and 11 rebounds in Friday’s 109-103 triumph over San Antonio. James added 26 points and 11 rebounds in the latest victory, with the Lakers going on a 9-0 run to end the game. The Grizzlies are learning how to survive without star guard Ja Morant and the Lakers present a stern test for their new look. Memphis is 1-1 after Morant went down with a sprained ankle that figures to keep him out for a month. That one victory came Friday in a 108-93 decision at Charlotte when Memphis had seven total players out with injury or illness concerns. Dillon Brooks had 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Memphis recorded a season-high 34 assists in the win, led by Tyus Jones’ 12.

Denver Nuggets v Minnesota Timberwolves

The Denver Nuggets look to defeat Minnesota for the ninth consecutive time when they visit the Timberwolves on Sunday in the first of back-to-back games between the squads. Tuesday’s game will be in Denver and the Nuggets hope to return home feeling better about themselves as they enter Sunday’s game with a substandard 1-4 record. The squad that reached the Western Conference finals last season hasn’t found its stride. Denver will be without forward Michael Porter Jr. (19.5 scoring average) for the second straight game due to COVID-19 protocols. Jamal Murray (21.0) scored a season-best 31 points in Friday’s 106-103 home loss to the Phoenix Suns and made four 3-pointers for the third straight game. Minnesota has dropped three consecutive games since star center Karl-Anthony dislocated his left wrist and the defense has been missing by allowing 127 points per game during the stretch. The Timberwolves have lost the games by 36, 23 and 21 points. No. 1 overall draft pick Anthony Edwards is averaging 15.4 points and has been consistent with a high output of 18 and a low of 12. Malik Beasley scored 21 points in Friday’s 130-109 home loss to the Washington Wizards and has scored 18 or more in four of the five games.

Utah Jazz v San Antonio Spurs

The Utah Jazz will begin a seven-game road trip when they visit the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday evening. Utah is off to an up-and-down start, alternating wins and losses in each of their first five contests of the season. The Jazz now go on the road for nearly two weeks for a trip that will span five states and the District of Columbia. San Antonio is looking to snap a three-game skid, which has spoiled the good feelings after the team won its first two games of the season. The Spurs are coming off back-to-back losses against the Los Angeles Lakers, although they looked better in the most recent game (a six-point loss) than they did in the first game (a 14-point loss). San Antonio is led in scoring by veteran DeMar DeRozan, who is averaging 21.8 points while shooting 49.3 percent from the field. Dejounte Murray has provided a solid secondary scoring option for the Spurs, and he is averaging 17.2 points on 52.1 percent shooting. For Utah, Mike Conley leads the way with 21.4 points per game on 47.4 shooting. Donovan Mitchell is second with 19.8 points per contest, but he has struggled to find his stroke with only 35.4 percent shooting.

Dallas Mavericks v Chicago Bulls

After getting a breakthrough performance from Luka Doncic in their most recent game, the Dallas Mavericks will look to keep rolling behind their star Sunday as they visit the Chicago Bulls to begin a three-game road trip. Doncic scored 27 points to go with a season-high 15 rebounds Friday, as his first double-double helped Dallas defeat Miami 93-83. Doncic added seven assists, and Tim Hardaway Jr. chipped in 18 points. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle hailed the team’s improved defense, which included hounding the Heat into 7-for-33 shooting from 3-point range. Dallas, however, continued to struggle with generating second-chance points, managing just seven. The Bulls’ two-game winning streak was snapped with Friday’s 126-96 loss at Milwaukee. Wendell Carter Jr. is 25-for-35 (71.4 percent) from the field in the past four games. Otto Porter Jr. is projected to start; making his first start of the season Thursday, he had season highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds in a 133-130 win at Washington. The Bulls remain without Ryan Arcidiacono, Chandler Hutchison, Lauri Markkanen and Tomas Satoransky due to NBA health and safety protocols. Hutchison tested positive for COVID-19 this week. Dallas leads the all-time series 41-37, including a 23-16 edge in games played in Chicago.

Los Angeles Clippers v Phoenix Suns

A clash atop the Western Conference will go down Sunday when the Phoenix Suns play host to the Los Angeles Clippers. The new-look Suns have come together quickly with five victories in their first six games led by new veteran point guard Chris Paul. The Suns have shown they can win with their guard combination of Paul and Devin Booker or they can also let their forwards carry the load like they did in an easy Dec. 29 victory over New Orleans when Paul and Booker scored in single digits. The continued emergence of forwards Mikal Bridges (15.3 points) and Cameron Johnson (13.5) has also been a difference maker for Phoenix. Booker leads the way with 20.5 points per contest. Clippers All-Star Kawhi Leonard is back after missing two games following an accidental elbow to the mouth from teammate Serge Ibaka. The Clippers will enter off a 106-100 loss Friday at Utah, another of the conference’s top teams. The Clippers will need to work on guard defense, especially after the Jazz’s Mike Conley just scored 33 points against them, making seven 3-pointers. Paul George scored 25 points and Leonard added 20, but the Clippers shot just 38.8 percent, with George and Leonard a combined 34.1 percent (14 of 41).

Portland Trail Blazers v Golden State Warriors

The Portland Trail Blazers will be looking to sweep one of the NBA’s new consecutive-game, same-site matchups this season when they visit the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco for a rematch Sunday. Damian Lillard paced a 123-98 win on Friday with 34 points, the 21st of which was the 15,000th of his NBA career. He joined Clyde Drexler as the only Trail Blazers ever to reach the milestone. The Trail Blazers outscored the Warriors 60-21 on 3-pointers to more than account for the 25-point margin of victory. Both Portland’s CJ McCollum and Golden State’s Kelly Oubre Jr. continued season-long 3-point trends in the game. McCollum shot 4-for-11 from distance, making him 26-for-57 for the season. He became just the second player in NBA history to make 25 or more 3-pointers in the first five games of a season, joining the Warriors’ Stephen Curry, who has done it twice. Oubre, meanwhile, shot 0-for-4 from beyond the arc, making him 1-for-25 for the season. He became the first NBA player to attempt at least 25 3-pointers in his team’s first five games and make fewer than three. Curry paced the Warriors with 26 points, going 4-for-12 on 3-pointers. His teammates combined to shoot 3-for-23.
