Cleveland Cavaliers v Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic bid to put an end to their losing streak on Monday when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Magic started the season with a 4-0 mark for the first time in franchise history before dropping back-to-back contests, including a 108-99 decision to Oklahoma City on Saturday. A porous shooting performance plagued Orlando in that contest, however their recent results versus the Cavaliers provide reason for optimism. The Magic won all three meetings against Cleveland in 2019-20, with Nikola Vucevic collecting 21 points and 10 rebounds in the season-opening victory. Speaking of double-doubles, Andre Drummond posted his franchise-best sixth straight double-double to begin the season after recording 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Cavaliers’ 96-91 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. Collin Sexton had 27 points in that contest to extend his streak of 20-point performances to 11 games dating back to last season. Sexton, in fact, is one of four players in franchise history to score at least 20 points in six games to start the season — joining LeBron James, Austin Carr and Bingo Smith. Sexton averages a team-best 26.0 points per game for Cleveland, while Darius Garland averages 17.2 points and a club-best 6.3 assists. Garland (shoulder) is questionable.

Charlotte Hornets v Philadelphia 76ers

The host Philadelphia 76ers will aim to extend their recent dominance against the Charlotte Hornets as the teams conclude a back-to-back series at Wells Fargo Center on Monday. Philadelphia topped Charlotte 127-112 on Saturday to extend its winning streak against the Hornets to 12 games while establishing season highs with 127 points and 35 assists. Ben Simmons notched a triple-double of 15 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists, Joel Embiid had 19 points and 14 rebounds and Tobias Harris scored 24 points. Harris has gone for 20-plus points in three successive games, marking the sixth time he has accomplished the feat with Philadelphia. Charlotte’s Terry Rozier led all scorers with 35 points and was 7-for-11 per 3-point shooting. Gordon Hayward scored 20 points for Charlotte and LaMelo Ball added 13 points and four steals. The Hornets are hoping to get Devonte’ Graham going amid struggles over the past two games. Graham was limited to five points on 1-for-10 shooting Saturday, matching his percentage during a 15-point loss to Memphis the night before. P.J. Washington was limited in the second half due to thumb issues, Hornets coach James Borrego said. Philadelphia’s Mike Scott missed Saturday’s game with a left knee injury and has been ruled out again.

New York Knicks v Atlanta Hawks

The New York Knicks look to complete a four-game road trip on a winning note when they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night. New York improved to 2-1 on the trip with a 106-102 win over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday as second-year pro RJ Barrett scored 25 points and made 4 of 5 3-point attempts. Barrett is 7 of 8 from 3-point range in two games at Indiana this season and 0-for-21 in New York’s other four contests. Julius Randle contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for his fourth straight double-double. The Knicks have won five of the past seven meetings with the Hawks, who fell 96-91 to the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. Atlanta started fast with 35 first-quarter points but had just 35 total in the second half. Star Trae Young had just 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting and also committed six of the Hawks’ 22 turnovers. Clint Capela recorded 16 points and 16 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Kevin Huerter is listed as questionable after injuring an ankle in the fourth quarter against Cleveland. Huerter had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the campaign. Rajon Rondo (knee) is doubtful and could miss his third straight contest.

Oklahoma City Thunder v Miami Heat

The Miami Heat will look to get Jimmy Butler back on track when they play host to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday. Butler returned Friday for his first game since Christmas Day because of a sprained right ankle, but went 0 of 6 from the field and had just two points on free throws. More than just Butler was out of sync, as the Heat fell 93-83 to the host Dallas Mavericks by shooting 37.2 percent from the field and 21.2 percent (7 of 33) from 3-point range, including 0 of 12 from distance while scoring 31 first-half points. Butler’s injury has forced the Heat into five different starting lineups in five games, with Miami already losing three of those. The Thunder is not expected to match their playoff push from last year, but they are feeling better about things following a 108-99 victory over the host Orlando Magic on Saturday. Leading scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 16 points, slightly below his team-leading 18.8 per-game average, but Darius Bazley stepped up with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while George Hill had 18 points. The Thunder dialed in their defense when it counted, holding Orlando to 28.6 percent (8 of 28) shooting in the fourth quarter.

Boston Celtics v Toronto Raptors

After splitting a back-to-back series at Detroit over the weekend, the Boston Celtics will look to continue their road trip with a victory Monday as they face the Toronto Raptors in Tampa, Florida. Jayson Tatum’s jumper with 2.9 seconds to go Sunday lifted the Celtics to a 122-120 overtime victory, as Tatum finished with a double-double of 24 points and a career-high 12 assists. Jaylen Brown paced Boston with 31 points, surpassing the 30-point mark for the third time this season. Brown is averaging 28 points while shooting 59.8 percent. Toronto rallied from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter before failing to hold on to the lead during Saturday’s 120-116 road loss to New Orleans. The Raptors stayed afloat behind a 26-for-27 effort from the foul line. Fred VanVleet has led the Raptors in scoring in two straight games after going for 27 points against the Pelicans two nights after scoring 25 in a home victory against the New York Knicks. VanVleet has made a 3-pointer in 37 straight games, one shy of tying C.J. Miles’ franchise record set in 2017-18. Chris Boucher scored 24 of Toronto’s 38 bench points Saturday. Boston leads the all-time series 57-40.

Dallas Mavericks v Houston Rockets

The leading stars of each team are ailing as the Houston Rockets host the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. Rockets standout James Harden (ankle) sat out Saturday’s 102-94 home win over the Sacramento Kings and the player averaging 37 points in three games is listed as questionable. But the view isn’t as optimistic when it comes to Luka Doncic (quadriceps) of the Mavericks after he sat out Sunday night’s 118-108 road loss against the Chicago Bulls. Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said Doncic’s injury isn’t a long-term deal but he said the point guard’s chances of playing against Houston won’t be known until some point on Monday. These teams didn’t play much defense in last season’s three meetings as they combined for a whopping 811 points — an average of 270.3 per game. The Rockets won two of the contests. John Wall scored 28 points in Houston’s win over Sacramento and the former Washington Wizards star is averaging 25 points after two games with the Rockets. Christian Wood recorded 20 points and 15 rebounds against the Kings for his third double-double. Doncic’s absence opened the door for Jalen Brunson, who capitalized by scoring 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting Sunday against the Bulls while also recording seven assists and five rebounds.

Detroit Pistons v Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks hope to build some momentum for the first time this season when they play host to the Detroit Pistons on Monday before the teams repeat the matchup Wednesday. The Bucks have been alternating defeats and victories since the season started, with their most recent effort resulting in a 126-96 home victory over the Chicago Bulls on Friday. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 29 points with 12 rebounds as the Bucks made 22 of their 45 3-point attempts. On Tuesday, the Bucks made an NBA record 29 3-pointers in a victory over the Miami Heat and they continue to develop a sharp-shooter identity. The Bucks lead the NBA with 18 3-pointers made per game and a 43.9 shooting percentage from 3-point range. The Pistons just finished up a back-to-back home scenario against the Boston Celtics, earning their first victory of the season 96-93 on Friday before falling 122-120 on Sunday. Jerami Grant scored 22 points on Sunday but the Pistons lost despite holding a lead in the final minute. Monday’s game will be the first of three in 10 days between the Bucks and Pistons. After this week’s double, the teams play at Detroit on Jan. 13 when the Pistons will be on a four-game home stretch.

Indiana Pacers v New Orleans Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans will go for their third win in a row when they host the Indiana Pacers on Monday. New Orleans (4-2) is coming off back-to-back wins over the Oklahoma City Thunder and Toronto Raptors, and it scored a season-high 120 points in its most recent contest. Brandon Ingram led the way with 31 points for the Pelicans on Saturday night against Toronto, and the team got double-doubles from Eric Bledsoe (19 points, 10 assists) and Steven Adams (13 points, 10 rebounds). Next comes Indiana (4-2), which opened the season 3-0 but has since lost two of three contests. The Pacers are coming off a 106-102 loss against the New York Knicks despite a 33-point performance from Malcolm Brogdon. Domantas Sabonis contributed a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards. Indiana is adjusting to life without T.J. Warren, who will miss his third of what could be many games after undergoing surgery on his injured left foot. The teams met twice last season, with New Orleans winning both of those games. The Pelicans cruised to a 120-98 win on their home court Dec. 28, 2019, and they followed up with a 124-117 victory in Indianapolis on Feb. 8.

Sacramento Kings v Golden State Warriors

Stephen Curry will have no time to rest on the laurels of a 62-point performance when the Golden State Warriors play the second night of a back-to-back on Monday in San Francisco against the Sacramento Kings. Curry set arena and personal bests when his explosion helped produce Sunday’s 137-122 over Portland, the same team that had beaten the Warriors 123-98 two nights earlier at the same site. The 62 points were a whopping 23 more than anyone had previously scored in San Francisco’s two-year-old Chase Center, and eight more than Curry’s previous career-best of 54 in New York against the Knicks in 2013. The 50-point outing was the seventh of Curry’s career. He’s followed the previous six with an average of 30.3 points in his next game. The Kings bring the same record as the Warriors (3-3) into the contest, but far less momentum. They dropped two straight in Houston on Thursday and Saturday, with the defense to blame in a 122-119 loss and the offense in a 102-94 defeat in the rematch. Rookie Tyrese Haliburton had 11 points in the opener, but suffered a bruised left wrist and missed Saturday’s game. He is not expected to play against the Warriors.
