Houston Rockets v Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers will be riding the high after a come-from-behind victory in overtime Monday and will aim to maintain that momentum when they open a two-game homestand against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. After rallying from a six-point deficit in the final 20.5 seconds of regulation to force overtime against the New Orleans Pelicans, the Pacers capped the comeback on Malcolm Brogdon’s floater with 3.6 seconds left in OT for the 118-116 victory. Brodgon had 21 points and 11 assists, while Victor Oladipo scored 25 points. Oladipo has at least 22 points in four of his six games on the season. Domantas Sabonis joined Brogdon with a double-double, contributing 19 points and 11 rebounds. Wednesday marks Houston’s first game against an Eastern Conference foe this season. The Rockets are coming off a 113-100 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. James Harden returned to after missing the previous game with a sprained ankle to score 21 points on 5-of-17 shooting, including 3 of 11 from 3-point range. Christian Wood paced Houston with 23 points. Danuel House Jr. (back spasms) missed the game, while Ben McLemore was available for the first time after beginning the season in quarantine due to COVID-19 protocols. He did not play. Houston boasts a 57-38 edge in the all-time series.

Washington Wizards v Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers will go for their fifth win in a row when they host the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night. Philadelphia quickly has established the best record in the NBA in its first season with Daryl Morey leading the front office and Doc Rivers handling coaching duties. The 76ers are coming off back-to-back wins over the Charlotte Hornets, with the first victory coming by 15 points and the second one coming by 17. Opposing teams are having trouble finding a way to stop Philadelphia big man Joel Embiid, who is averaging 23.2 points and 12.3 rebounds through his first six games. Tobias Harris (19.3 points), Seth Curry (15.4), Ben Simmons (13.3) and Shake Milton (12) all are scoring in double digits while Philadelphia is averaging 111 points on offense, compared with only 101.7 points allowed. The 76ers’ defense could pose a challenge for Washington, which has won back-to-back games after losing its first five contests of the season. In their last win, a 123-122 decision over the Brooklyn Nets, Bradley Beal led the way with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas Bryant (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Russell Westbrook (24 points, 10 assists) also posted double-doubles.

Cleveland Cavaliers v Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic aim to continue their recent mastery of the Cleveland Cavaliers when the teams meet Wednesday at Orlando for the second time in three days. The Magic posted their fifth consecutive victory over the Cavaliers with a convincing 103-83 victory Monday. Aaron Gordon put on a show, tying a career high with six 3-pointers while scoring to a season-best 24 points. Nikola Vucevic collected 23 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, who snapped a modest two-game losing skid after beginning the season with a franchise-best 4-0 start. Orlando hopes that Evan Fournier can return from a back injury after missing the past two games. Cleveland would relish the return of any number of its injured players. Darius Garland (shoulder) and Isaac Okoro (foot) are likely candidates to return Wednesday, while the availability of Dante Exum (calf) is uncertain after he left Monday’s game in the early going. Cleveland continues to be led by Collin Sexton, who scored 24 points on Monday to match LeBron James’ franchise record of seven straight games with at least 20 points to start a season. Andre Drummond has also been consistent, notching his seventh consecutive double-double following his 10-point, 14-rebound performance Monday.

Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

The Miami Heat dispatched the Boston Celtics to reach the NBA Finals three-plus months ago and now the teams renew acquaintances Wednesday in south Florida. Miami won that series in six games and enters the latest tussle on a good note after hammering the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder 118-90 on Monday. Bam Adebayo scored 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting and Kelly Olynyk made five 3-pointers while scoring 19 points. Jimmy Butler had 18 points after totaling just two Friday in his return from an ankle injury. Butler is averaging just 10.8 points and missed two games with the bad ankle. Boston defeated Miami five consecutive times before dropping a 112-106 decision on Aug. 4 in the Orlando-area bubble prior to falling in the Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics defeated the Toronto Raptors 126-114 on Monday in Tampa, Fla., behind 40 points from Jayson Tatum. The output was one shy of Tatum’s career high. Rookie point guard Payton Pritchard had season-bests 23 points and eight assists in 32 minutes as he received a bigger role with Marcus Smart (thumb) and Jeff Teague (ankle) both sidelined. Smart and Teague are each questionable for Wednesday’s game. Jaylen Brown scored 19 against the Raptors after averaging 32.7 points over the previous three games.

Charlotte Hornets v Atlanta Hawks

The Charlotte Hornets hope a change of scenery reverses their fortunes when they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. Charlotte has lost three in a row, the last two coming 127-112 and 118-101 at Philadelphia over a three-day stretch Saturday through Monday. There is talk of promoting Charlotte rookie LaMelo Ball to the starting lineup after four straight solid performances, including a 12-point, seven-rebound, nine-assist, two-steal effort in the rematch with the 76ers. The mostl likely candidate to be removed from the starting lineup would be Devonte’ Graham, who is shooting 27.1 percent for the season. The Hawks will be looking to avoid a disastrous homestand. They were 4-1 and looking forward to a Cavaliers-Knicks-Hornets sequence before losing by five points apiece to Cleveland and New York. Already without Danilo Gallinari, Onyeka Okongwu and Tony Snell, the Hawks sat Rajon Rondo with a sore knee for the full game Monday against the Knicks and were missing Bodgan Bodganovic for the fourth quarter after he turned his right ankle. Atlanta hopes to have both back at full speed to face a Hornets team it swept in last year’s two-game season series behind 30- and 31-point performances by Trae Young.

Utah Jazz v New York Knicks

The Utah Jazz will take a short bus ride over the East River on Wednesday to face the New York Knicks one day after they were rocked in a road loss to the Brooklyn Nets. The Jazz are 1-1 to open a seven-game road trip after they fell 130-96 to the Nets in a game where they were never competitive. Utah trailed 35-14 after one quarter and shot 38.8 percent from the field in the game. Donovan Mitchell had 31 points for the Jazz but he was essentially alone as fellow guard Mike Conley scored just eight points four days after he put up 33 against the Los Angeles Clippers. Utah entered having won three of their last four games. There is finally some excitement around the Knicks, who are 4-3 on the season under new head coach Tom Thibodeau after winning four of their last five. The Knicks went 3-1 on a four-game road trip that ended Monday with a 113-108 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Julius Randle scored 28 points with 17 rebounds, while RJ Barrett did his best to keep pace with 26 points and 11 rebounds. The Knicks have their best record after seven games since the 2012-13 team opened 6-1.

Oklahoma City Thunder v New Orleans Pelicans

Brandon Ingram aims to post his third straight 30-point outing when the New Orleans Pelicans host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. Ingram has scored exactly 31 in each of the past two games and has reached at least 20 in six of seven games this season. Ingram is averaging 25 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists as he looks to be an All-Star for the second straight season. Zion Williamson has recorded back-to-back 20-point games and has reached the mark four times while averaging 20.3 points and 8.4 rebounds. The Pelicans rolled to a 113-80 road victory over the Thunder on Dec. 31 after losing all four meetings last season. Oklahoma City was outscored 28-7 in the fourth quarter. The Thunder were routed by another foe on Monday when they lost 118-90 to the Miami Heat in the second contest of a five-game road trip. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (team-leading 18.7 points per game) scored 18 against the Heat and is averaging just 14 points over the past three games after averaging 23.3 over the first three contests of the season. Oklahoma City’s Darius Bazley is averaging 17.5 points and 10 rebounds over the past two games and has 12.0 points and 8.5 boards on the season.

Detroit Pistons v Milwaukee Bucks

The host Milwaukee Bucks will look to sweep a back-to-back set against the Detroit Pistons, while extending their winning streak to three games, when the teams meet Wednesday. Milwaukee topped Detroit 125-115 on Monday to climb above .500 for the first time this season behind a sterling effort from Giannis Antetokounmpo, who scored 43 points on 17-of-24 shooting while adding nine rebounds. Antetokounmpo had career-best 30-point first half en route to the 15th 40-point game of his career. Khris Middleton added 19 points as the Bucks shot a season-best 57.6 percent. Milwaukee was missing Pat Connaughton (groin) and Sam Merrill (ankle). Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer did not have a timetable for their return. Derrick Rose and Jerami Grant scored 24 points apiece to lead the Pistons, who were without Blake Griffin (rest) and Josh Jackson (ankle). Detroit coach Dwayne Casey said the team would take its time in assessing Jackson, who could return to the lineup Wednesday. In addition, Killian Hayes was set to undergo an MRI Tuesday after suffering an apparent hip flexor injury while diving for a loose ball Monday. Grant has scored 20-plus points in a career-high six straight games.

Toronto Raptors v Phoenix Suns

The Toronto Raptors will try to break out of their ice-cold start to the season when they travel to the desert to take on the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. Toronto sits in second-to-last place in the Eastern Conference with just one victory, only a half-game in front of the cellar-dwelling Detroit Pistons. The early skid has been unexpected for the Raptors, who are two seasons removed from an NBA championship and have made the playoffs for seven straight years. Now comes a four-game road trip out west, starting with Phoenix, which has picked up where it left off after a strong performance in the NBA bubble. The Suns won four straight before losing their most recent game 112-107 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night. Phoenix has a whopping seven players who are averaging in double digits, led by Devin Booker with 21.1 points per game on 49.5 percent shooting. Chris Paul has complemented Booker in the backcourt with 13.4 points, 8.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game. Toronto also boasts a talented backcourt that includes leading scorer Fred VanVleet (21.8 points) and veteran Kyle Lowry (18.7). Pascal Siakam is coming off a season-high 22 points in a 126-114 loss to the Boston Celtics.

Chicago Bulls v Sacramento Kings

After a winless three-game road trip, the Sacramento Kings will return home Wednesday to search for answers in a matchup against the Chicago Bulls. The Kings lost a pair of games at Houston and then were thumped 137-106 at Golden State on Monday. Sacramento watched Golden State shoot 53.5 percent from 3-point range, while also getting outscored 50-40 in the paint. De’Aaron Fox and Harrison Barnes each scored 18 points, but Buddy Hield was just 3 of 11 from 3-point range while scoring a season-low 10 points. The Kings trailed by 20 at halftime. Sacramento has averaged 10.1 made 3-pointers per game, second to last in the NBA. After a rough 0-3 start under new head coach Billy Donovan, the Bulls have now won four of their last five, including a 111-108 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday. Second-year player Coby White had 21 points, while Otto Porter Jr. had 19. The Bulls trailed by as many as 20 points in the second quarter, before taking their first lead midway through the fourth quarter, when they outscored Portland 30-23. Chicago’s four-game road trip now heads to California and will conclude over the weekend with two games against both Los Angeles teams after facing Sacramento.

Los Angeles Clippers v Golden State Warriors

The Los Angeles Clippers will try to salvage one win out of a back-to-back situation when they visit the red-hot Golden State Warriors at San Francisco on Wednesday night. Los Angeles came up short 116-113 at home against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday. The Clippers played that one without Paul George, who was held out because of a sore ankle. He likely will be a game-time decision on Wednesday. Kawhi Leonard had 30 points in the loss. He was one of the leading visitor scorers at the new Chase Center last season, totaling 44 points in a pair of Clippers wins. The Clippers swept the season series 3-0. The Warriors will be seeking a third straight win, having put up a home-team arena-record 137 points on consecutive nights in one-sided wins over Portland on Sunday and Sacramento on Monday. Stephen Curry followed up his 62-point outburst against the Blazers with 30 points against the Kings. Curry’s eight assists Monday contributed to 41 by the Warriors, setting another arena home-team record. The matchup features representatives from five of the NBA’s last six titles, with the Warriors (three), former Cleveland Cavaliers (and current Clippers) coach Tyronn Lue (one) and former Toronto Raptors star Leonard (one) dominating the rings.
