Philadelphia 76ers v Brooklyn Nets

The Nets will be looking to break even on a six-game homestand when they host the 76ers on Thursday night. The matchup was foreseen as the first between Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid as Atlantic Division rivals, but that won’t happen due to Durant’s absence in COVID protocol. The Nets (4-4) didn’t miss Durant in their first outing without him Tuesday in a 130-96 shellacking of Utah. Kyrie Irving (29 points) and Caris LaVert (24) took up the scoring slack as Brooklyn bounced back from consecutive home losses to Atlanta and Washington. The Nets have averaged 130.8 points in their four wins this season, but just 108.3 in their four losses. The 76ers (7-1) will be playing the second night of a back-to-back, but will do so riding the momentum of a five-game winning streak. The fifth win didn’t come easy, as Philadelphia survived a 60-point explosion from Bradley Beal to pull out a 141-136 home win over Washington. Embiid led the way with 38 points in 37 minutes, while Seth Curry came up big with 28, including six 3-pointers. The 76ers won the last three meetings between the two last season, but needed overtime in the final head-to-head, eventually prevailing when Embiid (39 points) outdueled LeVert (25).

Cleveland Cavaliers v Memphis Grizzlies

Collin Sexton looks to continue his strong start when the Cleveland Cavaliers visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday. Sexton scored 21 points in Wednesday’s 105-94 road loss to the Orlando Magic to set the franchise record with eight straight 20-point outings to start the season. LeBron James (seven to open the 2004-05 season) held the old mark. Sexton was 8-of-20 shooting against the Magic to shoot below 50 percent for just the second time this season. Rising point guard Darius Garland (shoulder) will sit out his third straight game. Garland averages 17.2 points and 6.3 assists. Big man Andre Drummond had 19 points and 15 rebounds on Wednesday for his eighth straight double-double. Both teams have dropped their past two games — with both of Memphis’ setbacks coming versus the Los Angeles Lakers. Center Jonas Valanciunas recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds for his seventh straight double-double. No Grizzlies scored more than 13 points in the contest as the club sorely misses star point guard Ja Morant (ankle). Rookie Desmond Bane has emerged as a solid 3-point threat as he has made 15 of 32 attempts. He had one against the Lakers, marking the first time he hasn’t made multiple treys. The teams split two meetings last season.

Minnesota Timberwolves v Portland Trail Blazers

The Minnesota Timberwolves aim to halt a seven-game slide in Portland when they visit the Trail Blazers on Thursday night. The Timberwolves last won in Portland on April 9, 2016, which is just one of two road triumphs against the Trail Blazers in the past 28 visits. Things aren’t going well as Minnesota arrives in town with a five-game losing streak after Tuesday’s 123-116 to the host Denver Nuggets. D’Angelo Russell was stellar with season highs of 33 points and 11 assists. Minnesota will be without star center Karl-Anthony Towns (dislocated left wrist) for the sixth straight contest, while coach Ryan Saunders is hopeful Towns will be back in action sometime next week. Portland has lost back-to-back games, including a 111-108 home setback against the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday. The Trail Blazers blew a 20-point first-half lead and allowed 66 points in the second half. Carmelo Anthony missed a tying 3-point attempt with 2.7 seconds left. CJ McCollum made six treys while scoring a team-best 26 points. Lillard recorded 24 points and nine assists but was just 3 of 11 from 3-point range. Lillard averaged 24.5 points as the Trail Blazers split two meetings with Minnesota last season. Portland has won six of the past eight overall matchups.

Dallas Mavericks v Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets look to continue their ascent on Thursday when they host the Dallas Mavericks. Denver limped out of the blocks with losses in four of its first five games before completing a home-and-home sweep of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Nikola Jokic collected 19 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in the Nuggets’ 124-109 victory in Minneapolis on Sunday before recording 35, 15 and six, respectively, in a 123-116 victory in Denver two nights later. Jokic has four triple-doubles on the season and is averaging team-leading totals in points (24.1), rebounds (11.7) and assists (11.9). The 7-footer nearly averaged a triple-double in the season series versus Dallas in 2019-20, however the Mavericks prevailed in two of the three outings. Luka Doncic knows a thing or two about triple-doubles as well, as the 2018-19 NBA Rookie of the Year had 33 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists in Dallas’ 113-100 victory at Houston on Monday. Doncic averaged 22.3 points and 8.0 assists in three encounters with Denver last season. Tim Hardaway Jr. highlighted his season-high, 30-point performance on Monday by making 8 of 10 shots from 3-point range. Hardaway, however, was just 5 of 22 from beyond the arc in his previous two games combined.

San Antonio Spurs v Los Angeles Lakers

The San Antonio Spurs will get a chance at a rare Los Angeles sweep Thursday but the challenge will be large as they take on the champion Lakers. The Spurs got off to a hot start Tuesday and held on for a 116-113 road victory over the Clippers to end a four-game losing streak. Now comes a road duel with the Lakers, a team that won a pair of games at San Antonio last week. Patty Mills scored 27 points with the help of a career-best eight 3-pointers against the Clippers as the Spurs took a 24-point lead in the second quarter. The Clippers clawed back on top early in the fourth quarter, but San Antonio found another gear to earn the victory. The Lakers will enter on a four-game winning streak following their two victories at San Antonio, with two more victories at Memphis. A 108-94 victory over the Grizzlies on Sunday was followed by a hard-fought 94-92 triumph Tuesday when Los Angeles overcame a two-point deficit with 5:18 remaining. LeBron James and Anthony Davis each scored 26 points and fueled a late 9-2 run to put away the Grizzlies. There is a possibility Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (ankle) and Alex Caruso (health and safety protocols) could return Thursday.
