Phoenix Suns v Detroit Pistons

Little Caesars Arena | 11:00am AEDT

The Phoenix Suns look to continue their fast start to the season on Friday when they open a three-game road trip against the Detroit Pistons. The Suns answered just their second loss of the season with a 123-115 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. Devin Booker scored 24 points to pave the way for Phoenix, which made 21 shots from 3-point range to post its fifth win in six outings. Booker made three shots from beyond the arc and combined with Chris Paul and Cameron Payne to record 24 assists versus the Raptors. Booker had 22 points and seven assists in the Suns’ 116-108 loss at Detroit on Feb. 5, and 26 and 6, respectively, in a 113-111 setback just over three weeks later. The Pistons have notched two-game sweeps of the Suns in each of the last three seasons and they would relish another win over Phoenix, considering they have lost three in a row and seven of eight games this season. Detroit has allowed an average of 125.7 points over their last three games. Jerami Grant erupted for 31 points and rookie reserve Saddiq Bey added 20 and 10 rebounds in Detroit’s 130-115 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Washington Wizards v Boston Celtics

TD Garden | 11:30am AEDT

The Boston Celtics will go for their fourth win in a row when they host the Washington Wizards on Friday night. Boston already has put together a season-high three victories in a row against the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat. The latest win, a narrow 107-105 margin over Miami on Wednesday, included a team-high 27 points from Jayson Tatum on 10-for-21 shooting. Teammate Jaylen Brown contributed a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Now the Celtics shift their focus to the Wizards, who are coming off a hard-fought 141-136 loss at the Philadelphia 76ers. Bradley Beal will look to follow up on his mammoth performance Wednesday in which he scored 60 points on 20-for-35 shooting. Beal made 7 of 10 attempts from beyond the arc and 13 of 15 attempts from the free-throw line to give his team a chance. The outburst increased his team-high scoring average to 34.3 points per game this season, while Russell Westbrook ranks second with 20.5 points to go along with 10.7 rebounds and 11.8 assists. The Celtics-Wizards matchup will bring together two longtime friends in Beal and Tatum, who attended the same high school in St. Louis — Chaminade — albeit several years apart.

Charlotte Hornets v New Orleans Pelicans

Smoothie King Center | 11:30am AEDT

Gordon Hayward looks to follow up the highest-scoring effort of his career when the Charlotte Hornets visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. Hayward scored 44 points during Charlotte’s 102-94 road victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday and said afterward that he never previously scored 40 points at any level of basketball. Hayward has scored 20 or more on four occasions so far in his first season with the Hornets. First-round pick LaMelo Ball has reached double digits in five straight outings after having 13 points and eight rebounds versus Atlanta as Charlotte snapped a three-game skid. Ball will be facing his older brother Lonzo of the Pelicans for the first time. The Pelicans have lost two straight games after falling 111-110 to the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. Zion Williamson scored 29 points for his third straight 20-point effort. Brandon Ingram scored 24 points and has four consecutive 20-point efforts and seven in eight games. JJ Redick sustained a bruised right knee on Wednesday and didn’t practice Thursday, leaving his availability in doubt. Steven Adams recorded his first career triple-double (10 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) against his former club. New Orleans won last season’s lone matchup and has prevailed in six of the past seven meetings.

Oklahoma City Thunder v New York Knicks

Madison Square Garden | 11:30am AEDT

Aiming to extend their winning streak to four games, the New York Knicks will host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday as they continue a three-game homestand. Julius Randle has notched a double-double in six consecutive games after scoring a season-high 30 points to go with 16 rebounds in Wednesday’s 112-100 win against Utah. Austin Rivers chipped in 23 points, including four treys in the final 4:17, as the Knicks rallied from an 18-point first-half deficit. New York’s Nerlens Noel was sidelined with a sprained left ankle and sore left knee. Alec Burks (left ankle sprain) has missed the past five games and will be re-evaluated in 7-10 days as he is placed in a walking boot, the team said. Oklahoma City has won three straight against New York to take a 67-66 advantage in the all-time series. The Thunder, who are in the midst of a five-game road trip, have won two of three after edging New Orleans 111-110 on Wednesday behind George Hill’s go-ahead free throws with 12 seconds to go. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander paced Oklahoma City with 21 points and nine assists. Darius Bazley has posted double-doubles in two of three games after contributing 20 points and 12 rebounds against the Pelicans.

Orlando Magic v Houston Rockets

Toyota Center | 12:00pm AEDT

One game after losing Markelle Fultz for the season because of an ACL injury in his left knee, the Orlando Magic will have to move on in a road game Friday against the Houston Rockets. Fultz was scoring 14.3 points per game with 6.1 assists heading into Wednesday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers when he went down just over four minutes into an eventual 105-94 victory. Fultz joins Jonathan Isaac, who also is out for the season with an ACL tear. Terrence Ross scored 20 points and Dwayne Bacon added 19 as the Magic earned their second victory over the Cavs in three days. Friday’s game starts a run where the Magic will play eight of their next nine games on the road. The Rockets dropped a 114-107 decision at Indiana on Wednesday in their lone road game during a seven-game stretch. James Harden scored a season-low 15 points for the Rockets in the defeat, well below his average of 29.4 points per game. Harden’s 14 field-goal attempts and five 3-point attempts in 39 minutes also were his lowest this season. The Rockets were without forward Christian Wood (23.6 points per game) because of left knee soreness. He is questionable for Friday.

Utah Jazz v Milwaukee Bucks

Fiserv Forum | 12:00pm AEDT

The Milwaukee Bucks bid to remain perfect at home this season when they host the Utah Jazz on Friday night. The Bucks sport a 4-0 record at Fiserv Forum and have posted three decisive victories to begin their current five-game homestand, including back-to-back wins over the Detroit Pistons. Giannis Antetokounmpo answered his season-high 43-point performance in a 125-115 victory over the Pistons on Monday with 25 more two nights later in a convincing 130-115 romp. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player jolted the Jazz the last time he saw them, erupting for 50 points and 14 rebounds in Milwaukee’s 122-118 win on Nov. 25, 2019. Brook Lopez posted season highs in points (17) and 3-pointers (four) on Wednesday night for the Bucks, who haven’t been shy on offense this season. Milwaukee’s 125.3 points per game rank comfortably atop the NBA heading into Thursday’s slate. That’s bad news for a Utah team that struggled to ignite its offense in a 112-100 loss to New York on Wednesday. Jordan Clarkson had 19 points and Joe Ingles added 16 for the Jazz, who squandered an 18-point lead in the second quarter en route to losing their second straight game. Utah has allowed 116.0 points per game in four losses.

Toronto Raptors v Sacramento Kings

Golden 1 Center | 2:00pm AEDT

With a three-game losing streak now behind them, the Sacramento Kings will move on to a matchup against the Toronto Raptors on Friday. The Kings dispatched the Chicago Bulls 128-124 on Wednesday to kick off a seven-game homestand. Richaun Holmes scored 24 points and Marvin Bagley III had 21 points with 12 rebounds, but point guard De’Aaron Fox left in the first quarter with a hamstring strain. His status for Friday’s game is uncertain. Rookie Tyrese Haliburton stepped into the void and scored 15 of his season-best 17 points in the fourth quarter. Haliburton, who was returning from a wrist injury that cost him two games, sealed the victory on a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining. The Raptors enter having lost three consecutive games and six of seven on the season. The most recent setback came Wednesday in a 123-115 defeat at Phoenix. Pascal Siakam had 32 points in the loss, while Kyle Lowry had 24. Fred VanVleet was held to 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting, well below his 20.6 per-game average. Afterward, VanVleet said he saw some positives to build on in the loss. Friday’s game is the second of a four-game west-coast trip for the Raptors that also has stops at Golden State and Portland.

LA Clippers v Golden State Warriors

Chase Center | 2:00pm AEDT

The Clippers will be looking for a two-game sweep in their three-day visit to San Francisco when they get a rematch from the Warriors on Friday night. Nicolas Batum and Patrick Beverley combined for three late 3-pointers in Los Angeles’ 108-101 win in the first game of the set on Wednesday. The Clippers shot 25-for-25 at the free-throw line, outscoring Golden State by 10 from the stripe. Paul George (9-for-9) and Kawhi Leonard (7-for-7) combined for 16 of the foul shots. Marcus Morris Sr. made his season debut after hurting his knee in training camp. He contributed 12 points to the win in 18 minutes. Beverley was also the driving force in a defense that held Stephen Curry to one 3-pointer and just 13 points. Curry, who had a 62-point game Sunday against Portland, tweaked his ankle at the end of Wednesday’s game and is listed as questionable. The Warriors rebounded from a 25-point loss two nights earlier to beat the Trail Blazers by 15 in the rematch, and will be looking to follow the same script in order to salvage a split with the Clippers. Andrew Wiggins and Eric Paschall paced Golden State with 19 points apiece Wednesday, but the Warriors hurt themselves with 8-for-30 shooting on 3-pointers.

Brooklyn Nets v Memphis Grizzlies

FedExForum | 12:00pm AEDT

The Brooklyn Nets will be without Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. Brooklyn didn’t have either when it dispatched of the 76ers 122-109 on Thursday, getting 28 points off the bench from Joe Harris and 22 from starter Caris LeVert. Durant missed the game due to COVID protocol, while Irving was a no-show, officially out of action due to “personal reasons” that also prevented him from making the flight to Memphis. LeVert handled a majority of the ball-handling chores in Irving’s absence against the 76ers, recording 10 assists. Memphis also will be missing its big gun with Ja Morant currently sidelined with an ankle injury. The Grizzlies have lost four of five with their young star on the sidelines, averaging 98.2 points in those games after opening the season with a 115.7 average in their first three contests. Morant was injured in a 116-111 overtime win at Brooklyn on Dec. 28, a game in which the Grizzlies’ Kyle Anderson matched LeVert for game-high scoring honors with 28 points. Neither Durant nor Irving played in that game, either. Memphis’ big advantage over Brooklyn in the earlier matchup came at the free-throw line, where the Grizzlies went 22-for-29, while the Nets went 15-for-17.

Chicago Bulls v Los Angeles Lakers

Staples Center | 2:00pm AEDT

The Los Angeles Lakers strive to knock off the visiting Chicago Bulls for the seventh straight time when the teams meet Friday. The Lakers will be looking to rebound from Thursday’s 118-109 home loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Los Angeles never once led in the setback. LeBron James recorded 27 points, 12 assists and six rebounds and Anthony Davis added 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Alex Caruso returned from a five-game absence due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols to contribute eight points in 20 minutes against the Spurs. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (ankle) could miss his fourth straight game. Chicago is playing the third contest of a four-game road trip and it beat the Portland Trail Blazers 111-108 on Tuesday before losing to the Sacramento Kings 128-124 one night later. Second-year pro Coby White scored a career-best 36 points against the Kings — he also had seven assists — and is averaging 26.7 points over the past three contests. Sidekick Zach LaVine added 32 points for his third 30-point outing of the campaign. The Bulls are playing shorthanded with Chandler Hutchison and Tomas Satoransky out after testing positive for COVID-19 and Lauri Markkanen and Ryan Arcidiacono out due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
