Chicago Bulls v Los Angeles Clippers

Staples Center | 8:00am AEDT

Still struggling to perform like the contender they were predicted to be, the Los Angeles Clippers will return home Sunday for an afternoon matchup against the Chicago Bulls. The Clippers have no qualms about their split in a back-to-back at Golden State, but they have yet to get on a run this season. They have not won more than two consecutive games. Paul George leads the team with 24.7 points per game, while Kawhi Leonard has 23.1 and the duo had 25 and 24 points respectively in a 115-105 loss to the Warriors on Friday. The Clippers had 65 points in the first half but just 40 the rest of the way, and 18 in the decisive fourth quarter. The Bulls are just 1-2 on their four-game West Coast road trip, but the team is still making significant strides under new head coach Billy Donovan. After a victory at Portland on Tuesday, the Bulls lost at Sacramento and in L.A. to the Lakers by a combined six points. UCLA alum Zach LaVine scored 38 points for the Bulls in Friday’s 117-115 loss to the Lakers during his homecoming. He gets another chance to perform in town Sunday. Wendell Carter Jr. had a season-best 23 points against the Lakers.

San Antonio Spurs v Minnesota Timberwolves

Target Center | 12:00pm AEDT

The San Antonio Spurs will stay in Minneapolis for a rematch with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday after playing a thriller Saturday that deserved a repeat. The Spurs never trailed in overtime and earned a 125-122 victory over the Timberwolves as DeMar DeRozan scored a season-high 38 points. Dejounte Murray added 22 points and 12 rebounds as San Antonio extended its winning streak to three games, all on the road, after winning twice at Los Angeles against the Clippers and Lakers. San Antonio had just six turnovers in 53 minutes. Before their winning streak, the Spurs had lost four consecutive games. The Timberwolves might have lost Saturday, but they are feeling better about their situation after Karl-Anthony Towns made his return. Towns missed six games, all Minnesota defeats, after he dislocated his left wrist before the new year. He had a heavy wrap on his left arm and appeared uncomfortable at times but still scored 25 points with 13 rebounds in 37 minutes. It remains to be seen if the Timberwolves are comfortable with him playing in consecutive games. Malik Beasley had 29 points for the Timberwolves, who were outscored 24-11 at the free-throw line and lost despite shooting 50 percent from the field.

Denver Nuggets v New York Knicks

Madison Square Garden | 10:00am AEDT

The Denver Nuggets aim to defeat New York for the sixth straight time and 11th in the past 12 meetings when they visit the Knicks on Sunday. Denver opened a three-game road trip with a 115-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. Gary Harris established season bests of 21 points and five 3-pointers and is averaging 18 points over the past two games. Nikola Jokic had 15 points and 12 assists and fell one rebound shy of his fifth triple-double of the campaign. Michael Porter Jr. has missed five straight games due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols and will likely sit out again. New York had a three-game winning streak snapped with Friday’s 101-89 home loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. First-year coach Tom Thibodeau was displeased with the effort in which his club shot 35.8 percent from the field and was outrebounded 62-48. RJ Barrett had a team-best 19 points but was just 7-of-21 shooting. Elfrid Payton was just 4 of 16 from the field while scoring 16 points. Payton was 10-of-15 shooting one game earlier when he scored 22 in a 112-100 home win over the Utah Jazz. Alec Burks (ankle) will sit again. He averaged 20.7 points over the first three games before the injury.

Toronto Raptors v Golden State Warriors

Chase Center | 12:30pm AEDT

Two of the hottest guards in the NBA match up Sunday night when the Toronto Raptors meet the Golden State Warriors at San Francisco. Fred VanVleet scored 34 points in Toronto’s 144-123 win at Sacramento on Friday. The Raptors set a franchise record for points in a regulation contest. For VanVleet, it was his fifth game this season with 25 or more points, while the 34 was his second-most this season behind his 35 on Monday against the Celtics. The Raptors made 20 3-pointers at Sacramento, with VanVleet hitting five of them, while Normal Powell and Terence Davis connected on four each. Powell had a game-high 37 points when the Raptors won at Golden State last March in their only meeting since the 2019 Finals, which Toronto won in six games. The Warriors poked their head above .500 at 5-4 for just the second time since those Finals with Friday’s 115-105 home win over the Los Angeles Clippers. Curry had 38 points and has 130 in Golden State’s last three wins, which have come in the Warriors’ last four games. The contest pits the two winningest active coaches percentage-wise in the NBA (minimum of one full season) in Golden State’s Steve Kerr (.707) and Toronto’s Nick Nurse (.698).

Miami Heat v Boston Celtics

TD Garden | 11:00am AEDT

The Boston Celtics will be severely shorthanded on Sunday when they attempt to defeat the visiting Miami Heat for the second time in five days. Star Jayson Tatum is reportedly in quarantine and Tristan Thompson, Robert Williams III and Grant Williams have been ruled out due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. In addition, star Jaylen Brown, Javonte Green and Semi Ojeleye are questionable due to the protocols. Rookie Payton Pritchard converted the winning putback with 0.2 seconds left in Boston’s 107-105 win at Miami on Wednesday and could have a bigger role in the rematch if stellar scorers Tatum and Brown are both sidelined. Jimmy Butler had 26 points and eight rebounds in the loss to Boston and he followed up that performance by recording 26 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in Saturday’s 128-124 road win over the Washington Wizards. Tyler Herro scored a career-high 31 points and Goran Dragic had 21 points off the bench and matched his career high of seven 3-pointers. Bam Adebayo collected a season-high 16 rebounds in just 21 minutes due to foul trouble. Boston has won six of the past seven regular-season meetings, but the Heat prevailed in six games in last season’s Eastern Conference finals.

Utah Jazz v Detroit Pistons

Little Caesars Arena | 7:00am AEDT

After making a franchise-record 25 3-pointers in Friday’s 131-118 victory at Milwaukee, the Utah Jazz will take the court for the fifth time on their seven-game road trip as they visit the Detroit Pistons on Sunday afternoon. The Jazz are now 2-2 on the trip by topping Milwaukee, becoming the first team in league history to see five players make at least four 3-pointers in the same game. Donovan Mitchell led Utah with 32 points, while Royce O’Neale made six 3-pointers on eight attempts. Utah’s Jordan Clarkson is averaging 16.7 points, third in the NBA among reserves. Joe Ingles (Achilles) was sidelined Friday, snapping his league-best streak of consecutive games at 384. Detroit rallied from a 23-point deficit against Phoenix on Friday to open a four-game homestand with a 110-105 overtime victory. Jerami Grant had 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons, while Blake Griffin joined him in the double-double club by tallying 16 points and 12 boards. The Pistons made 25-of-29 free throws to tie a franchise record with their fourth straight game shooting at least 85 percent from the foul line. Utah defeated Detroit in both meetings last season and has won eight successive games in the series overall.

Oklahoma City Thunder v Brooklyn Nets

Barclays Center | 10:00am AEDT

The Oklahoma City Thunder will go for their third win in a row when they visit the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday evening. Oklahoma City has posted back-to-back victories over the New Orleans Pelicans and New York Knicks, and now the team will wrap up a five-game road trip with the potential to go 4-1 during that stretch. Brooklyn could get a big boost from star forward Kevin Durant, who is expected to play after sitting out the past week because of the league’s health and safety protocols. Durant leads the Nets with 28.2 points over six games to go along with 7.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists. The status of Nets point guard Kyrie Irving is less certain for Sunday. Irving has missed two straight games because of personal reasons, and he is listed as questionable to play against the Thunder. The teams met only once last season, with the Thunder hanging on for a 111-103 win in overtime on Jan. 7, 2020. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 22 points for Oklahoma City in that contest, while Taurean Prince led the Nets with 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including 5 of 10 from beyond the arc.

Los Angeles Lakers v Houston Rockets

Toyota Center | 11:00am AEDT

The Los Angeles Lakers visit the Houston Rockets on Sunday night for the first of two straight meetings between the Western Conference rivals. The Lakers and Rockets are meeting for the first time since Los Angeles defeated Houston in five games during the Western Conference semifinal in September. Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James and Anthony Davis put their best foot forward in that series, with the former averaging 25.8 points and 10.0 rebounds while the latter averaged 25.4 and 14.0 rebounds. James collected 28 points, seven rebounds and seven assists on Friday as the Lakers posted their fifth win in six outings with a 117-115 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Davis sat out the contest with a right adductor strain, however he is expected to be available to play on Sunday night. The Rockets answered four losses in their first six games with a resounding 132-90 home romp over the Orlando Magic on Friday. Christian Wood returned from a one-game hiatus because of a sore left knee to score 22 points and match a career high with 15 rebounds versus the Magic. James Harden also recorded a double-double (15 points, 13 assists), marking the third straight game that he has done so.
