HORNETS VS 76ERS

Spectrum Center | 11:00am AEDT

The Philadelphia 76ers aim to continue their run of dominance over the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday when the teams meet in North Carolina. The 76ers have won both meetings this season and 13 in a row overall dating back to January of 2017. Tobias Harris had 24 points in Philadelphia’s 127-112 victory over Charlotte on Jan. 2 and 22 in a 118-101 win two nights later. Harris also stepped up in the absence of three-time All-Star center Joel Embiid (back), scoring a season-high 27 points in the 76ers’ 119-110 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. Embiid, who averages team-best totals in points (28.3) and rebounds (11.1), likely will return to the lineup against the Hornets after he “looked good” in practice on Tuesday in the eyes of head coach Doc Rivers. With a win on Wednesday, Charlotte will match a season-high four-game winning streak initially set from Jan. 6-11. Malik Monk erupted for 36 points in the Hornets’ 129-121 overtime victory at the Miami Heat on Monday. Rookie LaMelo Ball followed up a 27-point performance in a 126-114 win over the Milwaukee Bucks with 14 points and seven assists while making his first career start.

THUNDER VS ROCKETS

Chesapeake Energy Arena | 12:00pm AEDT

The Houston Rockets will go for their seventh win in a row when they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night. It will be the finale of a back-to-back set between the teams, who also squared off Monday night in Oklahoma City. The Rockets rolled to a 136-106 win in that contest thanks to a balanced scoring attack that included seven players scoring in double figures. Eric Gordon led the way with 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. John Wall and Christian Wood added 18 points apiece, and Wood grabbed 11 rebounds for the double-double. Oklahoma City has lost two games in a row and five of its last seven. The Thunder were led Monday by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Darius Bazley and Hamidou Diallo each contributed 15 points. Gilgeous-Alexander leads the Thunder with 21.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game on the season. Houston’s top threat on offense is Wood, who is averaging 23.3 points to go along with 10.7 rebounds. The Rockets and Thunder met three times last season, with Oklahoma City winning two of those games.

HEAT VS WIZARDS

American Airlines Arena | 12:00pm AEDT

Losers in three of four to start a six-game homestand, the Miami Heat will aim for a turnaround Wednesday as they host the reeling Washington Wizards in the opener of a back-to-back series. The Heat are coming off Monday’s 129-121 overtime loss to the Charlotte Hornets. Miami was unable to hold a 10-point lead down the stretch and allowed the Hornets to connect for 21 three pointers. Jimmy Butler has 55 points, 16 rebounds and 13 assists in two games after missing the previous 10 games due to the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Max Strus established a career high with 19 points, topping his previous best by seven. Washington’s 132-121 home loss to Portland on Tuesday was the club’s fifth loss in six games. Bradley Beal paced the team with 37 points and has topped 25 in all 16 games to open the season, matching a feat by Michael Jordan. Russell Westbrook notched his fifth triple-double, collecting 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Wednesday’s game marks the beginning of a four-game road trip for the Wizards, who have lost each of their past three road contests by at least 18 points. The visiting Heat topped the Wizards 128-124 on Jan. 9 and are 88-42 against Washington all-time, including 48-16 at home.

PELICANS VS SUNS

Smoothie King Center | 1:30pm AEDT

The Phoenix Suns look to extend their winning streak to four straight games when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday. The Suns had one four-game victory stretch earlier this season and this three-game run features a blowout home win over the Golden State Warriors and back-to-back road triumphs over the Dallas Mavericks. Star guard Devin Booker (hamstring) returned from a four-game injury absence to score 24 points and make the decisive 3-pointer in Monday’s 109-108 win over Dallas. Chris Paul scored a season-best 34 points and averaged 31.5 in the two wins over the Mavericks. Deandre Ayton matched his season-best of 17 rebounds in both wins and is averaging 15 boards over the past eight contests. New Orleans has lost two straight games and 10 of its past 13. The Pelicans are 2-2 on a five-game homestand after falling 118-109 to the Sacramento Kings on Monday. Brandon Ingram scored 20 points against the Kings but was just 6-of-20 shooting. Ingram is just 11-of-35 shooting while averaging 17.5 points in the consecutive losses. Reserve Josh Hart scored 15 points and grabbed a season-best 13 rebounds. Steven Adams (calf) is listed as questionable after sitting out versus Sacramento. Phoenix has won four of the past five meetings.

HAWKS VS MAVERICKS

State Farm Arena | 11:30am AEDT

Trae Young and Luka Doncic go head-to-head for just the third time when the Atlanta Hawks host the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night. Doncic missed both meetings with Atlanta last season, so he has not seen Young since each scored 24 points in a Dallas home win in December of 2018. Doncic had 10 rebounds and Young 10 assists that night, but neither had a double-double in their only other matchup, that coming in the fourth game of the 2018-19 season while the reaction to their trade for one another four months earlier was still buzzing. Doncic hasn’t had a double-double in his last four outings, including Monday’s 109-108 home loss to the Suns. Kristaps Porzingis had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat. He, like Doncic, was absent for both games against the Hawks last season, contests the clubs split for the second straight year. John Collins put up big numbers for the Hawks in Porzingis’ absence last season, averaging 30.5 points and 14.0 rebounds. Collins had 22 points and Young 25 to complement 16 assists in Monday’s 107-99 home loss to the Lakers. The Hawks have alternated wins and losses in their last six games, while the Mavericks have lost six straight.

SPURS VS TIMBERWOLVES

AT&T Center | 12:30pm AEDT

The San Antonio Spurs will wrap up a seven-game homestand when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night. San Antonio has gone 3-3 during its extended stretch at home, which began Jan. 22 against the Dallas Mavericks. But the Spurs are hoping for a better performance from their most recent game, a 133-102 loss against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. Keldon Johnson finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds but little else went right for San Antonio, which allowed Memphis to shoot 55.9 percent (52 of 93) from the field and 50 percent (15 of 30) from 3-point range. The Timberwolves arrive in Texas having lost four of their last five games and eight of their last 10. Minnesota is coming off a narrow 100-98 loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night. D’Angelo Russell (18 points) and rookie Anthony Edwards (13) were the Timberwolves’ top scorers. This already marks the third game between the Spurs and Timberwolves this season. San Antonio won the first contest 125-122 in overtime on Jan. 9 in Minnesota, and the Timberwolves responded the following night with a 96-88 victory. Russell had 27 points in the win.

KINGS VS CELTICS

Golden 1 Center | 2:00pm AEDT

The Boston Celtics aim to defeat Sacramento for the ninth time in 11 meetings when they visit the Kings on Wednesday. Boston will be playing for the second straight night after posting a 111-107 win over the Golden State Warriors in Tuesday’s opener of a five-game road trip. Kemba Walker scored 19 points in a season-high 31 minutes but might be held out against the Kings. Walker missed the start of the season due to left knee soreness and has yet to play in back-to-back games this season. Jaylen Brown scored 18 points but missed out on his 11th straight 20-point effort. The Kings are beginning a stretch in which seven of eight games are at home. Sacramento has won four of its past five games and rallied for a 118-109 road win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday. De’Aaron Fox scored 17 straight Sacramento points during the fourth quarter to fuel the comeback and finished with 38 — his second-highest output of the season. Fox is averaging 28.3 points and 8.4 assists over the last seven games. Richaun Holmes added 17 points and 10 rebounds and matched his career best of six blocked shots.

BULLS VS KNICKS

United Center | 12:00pm AEDT

After snapping a three-game skid with Monday’s 110-102 home win against the New York Knicks, the Chicago Bulls will aim for a sweep of the abbreviated series Wednesday when they host the Knicks again. Lauri Markkanen is averaging 30.5 points over the past two games after scoring a game-high 30 on Monday while drilling six of the team’s 11 3-pointers. Zach LaVine scored 17 of his 21 points after halftime as the Bulls picked up just their third home win in nine tries this season. LaVine is shooting 62.5 percent (15 of 24) from 3-point range over the past three games. New York has lost two straight games and five of six. Julius Randle kept New York afloat Monday, collecting 23 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Elfrid Payton was held without an assist; the Knicks are 6-1 this season when he has at least five assists. Mitchell Robinson snagged eight rebounds against the Bulls and is looking for his seventh game with double-digit boards. The Knicks permit 104.2 points per game, second fewest in the NBA entering Tuesday’s games, but they have allowed 239 points in their past two games. Chicago leads the all-time series 124-109, including 77-37 at home.

BUCKS VS PACERS

Fiserv Forum | 11:00am AEDT

Malcolm Brogdon has unfinished business to tend to when the Indiana Pacers visit the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. Brogdon left the Bucks in a sign-and-trade after the 2019 season, then missed one entire game against his former team (sore neck) and all but 11 minutes of another (bruised hip). The two times he put in a full game against Milwaukee, he was shackled to an average of just 13.5 points. He has bumped up his season scoring average from 16.5 last season to 22.9 this year, the latter including his 23-point contribution in just 29 minutes during Tuesday’s 134-116 win over the Grizzlies. Domantas Sabonis (32 points, 13 rebounds) and Myles Turner (22 points, 11 rebounds) had double-doubles in the win, which snapped a two-game losing streak. The Bucks also ended a two-game skid in their most recent outing, a 134-106 home romp over the Trail Blazers on Monday. Jrue Holiday and Bobby Portis paced Milwaukee with 22 and 21 points, respectively. The Bucks and Pacers were seeded to meet in the semifinals of last year’s Eastern Conference playoffs, but Indiana lost to Miami in the first round. The Heat then eliminated the Bucks in the semifinals. The Bucks and Pacers are meeting for the first time since.

CAVALIERS VS CLIPPERS

Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse | 12:00pm AEDT

The Los Angeles Clippers will look to overcome a loss in their last outing and complete a six-game road trip on a high note Wednesday when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers. The contest marks the return of Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue to Cleveland after he was fired from the same post with the Cavaliers just six games into the 2018-19 season. Lue’s high point was when he guided Cleveland to the NBA title in 2016. Kawhi Leonard scored 33 points and Paul George added 26 points in Los Angeles’ 124-120 setback to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday. The loss was just the Clippers’ second in their last 12 outings overall, however they handed the Cavaliers a pair of lopsided losses in their two encounters last season. Cleveland avenged a 109-104 setback to Minnesota on Sunday by recording a 100-98 victory the following night in the rematch of the home-and-home series. Collin Sexton scored 26 points and Jarrett Allen added a season-high 23 to go along with 18 rebounds on Monday, however Andre Drummond likely will reclaim his starting spot after sitting out with a sore lower back. Drummond leads the NBA in rebounding at 15.1 per game.
