Detroit Pistons v Los Angeles Lakers

Staples Center | 2:00pm AEDT

The Los Angeles Lakers’ rock-solid defense will get another test Saturday when it goes up against the Detroit Pistons. The Lakers’ renewed commitment to defense came after they fell 107-92 at Detroit on Jan. 28. It was just the fifth victory of the season for the Pistons. Since that eye-opening setback, the Lakers have held three consecutive opponents under 100 points, including the Denver Nuggets on Thursday. LeBron James recorded his second triple-double of the season in the 114-93 victory over Denver, collecting 27 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Anthony Davis had a quiet night with 13 points and nine rebounds. The Lakers took control with a 19-0 run in the second half after trailing by 12 points early in the third quarter. The Pistons will enter after a 109-92 defeat to the Phoenix Suns on Friday. Jerami Grant scored 21 points while rookie Isaiah Stewart had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Detroit won’t lack for confidence Saturday after last week’s home victory over the Lakers when Blake Griffin scored 23 points and Wayne Ellington added 20. Not only will the Pistons be without the surprise factor in this one, but they will have to face Davis, who missed the previous game with a quad contusion.

Memphis Grizzlies v New Orleans Pelicans

Smoothie King Center | 1:00pm AEDT

The New Orleans Pelicans will be searching for another gear when they return home to face the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. The Pelicans earned a hard-fought 114-113 victory at Indiana on Friday night and have a quick turnaround to Saturday’s game, which is their fourth since Monday. New Orleans’ second consecutive victory, and fourth in six games, came after Brandon Ingram scored 30 points and the Pelicans held on after leading by 18 late in the third quarter. It was the third time in seven games Ingram has scored at least 30 points. Lonzo Ball had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Pelicans, while Zion Williamson had 18. The Grizzlies will enter on a two-game slide that followed their seven-game winning streak. Memphis fell 115-103 to the Houston Rockets on Thursday after losing by 18 to the Pacers on Tuesday. Ja Morant was held to 15 points Thursday and Dillon Brooks had 11. Rookie Desmond Bane matched a season high with 16 points, the third time he has reached that total and the second time in two games. Bane (9.9 points per game) has been in double digits over six consecutive contests. Memphis was without Jonas Valanciunas and Grayson Allen, who were in COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Brooklyn Nets v Philadelphia 76ers

Wells Fargo Center | 12:00pm AEDT

After stumbling through a 16-point home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday, the Philadelphia 76ers will look to rebound Saturday as they host the Brooklyn Nets. Joel Embiid led Philadelphia with 37 points, scoring 25 in the second quarter, joining Washington’s Bradley Beal as the lone players in the league to notch 25-plus points in a quarter this season. Tobias Harris chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ben Simmons (left calf tightness) missed the game, while Seth Curry sat out the second half due to illness. Harris has snagged 36 rebounds over the past four games and contributed a pair of double-doubles over that span. The Nets have lost two of three following Friday’s 123-117 home loss to Toronto, seeing a four-game streak of scoring at least 120 points come to a close. Kevin Durant scored just eight points as he was unable to start and later was forced to leave the game due to the NBA’s health and safety protocol. Joe Harris led the Nets with 19 points, while James Harden had a double-double of 17 points and 12 assists. Host Brooklyn defeated Philadelphia 122-109 on Jan. 7 as Harris produced a game-high 28 points off the bench.

Portland Trail Blazers v New York Knicks

Madison Square Garden | 5:00am AEDT

The Portland Trail Blazers will wrap up a six-game road trip when they visit the New York Knicks on Saturday. Portland is 3-2 so far on its trip, improving its overall road record to 7-4. The Blazers are coming off back-to-back wins over the Washington Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers. In Thursday’s 121-105 win over the 76ers, Gary Trent Jr. led Portland with 24 points, and Carmelo Anthony scored 22 while making 3 of 4 shots from beyond the arc. Star point guard Damian Lillard sat out because of a strained abdomen, but he is expected to return against the Knicks. Lillard leads Portland with 29.1 points per game to go along with 7.3 assists and 4.6 rebounds. The Blazers will remain shorthanded regardless because of the injury absences of C.J. McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic. As for the Knicks, this marks the start of a two-game homestand that wraps up with a game against the Miami Heat on Sunday. New York has lost five of its last seven games, but it is coming off a 107-103 win over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night. Julius Randle led the Knicks with 27 points and six assists, and Elfrid Payton contributed 20 points. Mitchell Robinson had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Golden State Warriors v Dallas Mavericks

American Airlines Center | 12:30pm AEDT

The onus will be on the Dallas Mavericks to play bigger or smaller, but certainly not the same, when they host the Golden State Warriors in a rematch of a 147-116 blowout loss on Saturday night. The Mavericks, whose tallest player (Kristaps Porzingis) hovered eight inches above any Warrior on a night when the visitors were missing all three of their centers, were outrebounded 54-45 and outscored 54-36 in the paint in Thursday’s series opener. Despite the height advantage, the Mavericks attempted more 3-pointers (50) than 2’s (42). The result: 41.3 percent shooting in a game where Golden State hit 57.3 percent. Luka Doncic and Porzingis led the Mavericks with 27 and 25 points, respectively. The game’s top scorer was Golden State’s Kelly Oubre Jr., whose seven 3-pointers accounted for more than half his career-best, 40-point total. Stephen Curry had 28 points, while Draymond Green contributed 15 assists to Golden State’s team total of 37. The Warriors also were missing their tallest reserve, Eric Paschall (swollen right knee), who worked out Friday and might return for the rematch. The last four Mavericks-Warriors games have been decided by an average of 31.5 points, with Dallas having swept last year’s three-game season series by an average of 31.7 points.

Chicago Bulls v Orlando Magic

Amway Center | 11:00am AEDT

Coming off a career-high 43-point effort against the Chicago Bulls on Friday, Nikola Vucevic is eager to try to top himself Saturday as the Orlando Magic host the Bulls to close a back-to-back. Vucevic added 19 rebounds in the Magic’s 123-119 victory, which snapped a four-game skid, and has notched a double-double in three consecutive games. Evan Fournier followed with 20 points, scoring 14 during a seven-minute span in the second quarter. Vucevic has led or tied for the team scoring lead 14 times this season and in rebounding 16 times. Chicago trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter but rallied to tie the game at 114 before faltering down the stretch to lose for the fifth time in six games. Zach LaVine had 26 points and eight assists, while rookie Patrick Williams set a career high with 20 points. Lauri Markkanen scored 13 points before exiting the game with a sprained right shoulder. Bulls coach Billy Donovan said following the game that it’s “unlikely” Markkanen will play on Saturday. The Magic took a 66-56 lead into the break to improve to 8-1 this season when leading at halftime. The Bulls lead the all-time series against the Magic 60-52.

Milwaukee Bucks v Cleveland Cavaliers

Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse | 12:00pm AEDT

The Milwaukee Bucks bid to match a season-high winning streak on Saturday night when they square off against the host Cleveland Cavaliers. The Bucks posted their third straight victory on Friday night when they opened their six-game road trip with a 123-105 win over the Cavaliers. Milwaukee, which won four consecutive contests from Jan. 9-15, has defeated Cleveland six straight times dating back to the 2018-19 season. Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo collected 33 points and 12 rebounds on Friday night to help the Bucks break open a tight game and send the sputtering Cavaliers to their sixth loss in eight games. No pun intended but the 6-foot-11 superstar played a large role in the Bucks recording a staggering 74 points in the paint. Cleveland’s Collin Sexton, who had a team-leading 19 points on Friday, is averaging 24.0 points over his last three contests. Andre Drummond had 18 points and nine rebounds on Friday after recording 26 and 24, respectively, in the Cavaliers’ 100-90 loss to the Bucks on Jan. 9. Taurean Prince’s 12 points on Friday were a result of four 3-pointers, however the rest of the team went 7-for-25 from beyond the arc. Prince finished second on the team with six rebounds.

Denver Nuggets v Sacramento Kings

Golden 1 Center | 9:00am AEDT

The Sacramento Kings will go for their third win in a row when they host the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. Sacramento posted back-to-back wins over the New Orleans Pelicans and Boston Celtics earlier in the week to move within one game of .500 on the season. In Wednesday’s 116-111 win over Boston, De’Aaron Fox led the Kings with a double-double of 26 points and 11 assists. Harrison Barnes scored 24 points, and Tyrese Haliburton continued his impressive rookie season with 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting off the bench. Denver is looking to bounce back after losing two of its last three games, including a 114-93 setback against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. The Nuggets shot only 39.1 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from 3-point range. Jamal Murray provided some rare highlights on offense with a team-high 20 points, and Monte Morris chipped in 16 off the bench. The teams already have played each other twice this season, with Sacramento winning both games. The Kings won 124-122 in overtime during the season opener Dec. 23, and they followed with a 125-115 win on Dec. 29. Last season, the Nuggets won two out of three games against the Kings.

Toronto Raptors v Atlanta Hawks

State Farm Arena | 12:00pm AEDT

The Toronto Raptors vie for a season-high four-game winning streak on Saturday when they continue their six-game road trip against the Atlanta Hawks. The Raptors, who previously won three in a row from Jan. 14-18, followed up a “home-and-home” sweep of the Orlando Magic with a 123-117 victory at the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. Pascal Siakam collected a season-high 33 points and 11 rebounds on Friday and averaged 25.3 points to help Toronto sweep a three-game regular-season series against Atlanta in 2019-20. Kyle Lowry had a season-high 30 points on Friday for the Raptors, who have won eight of their last 12 games. While things are looking up for Toronto, the Hawks will bid to avert a season high-tying four-game skid on Saturday when they conclude a four-game homestand. Atlanta, which previously lost four in a row from Jan. 2-9, was undermanned during its 112-91 setback to the Utah Jazz on Thursday. Star guard Trae Young (26.6 points per game, 9.0 assists per game) sat out with a right calf contusion, but is listed as questionable to face the Raptors. De’Andre Hunter, however, will miss his fourth consecutive contest on Saturday due to a knee injury. Clint Capela has recorded double-digit rebounds in 18 straight games for Atlanta.

Minnesota Timberwolves v Oklahoma City Thunder

Chesapeake Energy Arena | 12:00pm AEDT

The Minnesota Timberwolves look to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder for the second straight night when the teams wrap up a back-to-back in Oklahoma City on Saturday. D’Angelo Russell drained the game-winning 3-pointer with 3.7 seconds left as Minnesota posted a 106-103 victory on Friday. The triumph snapped the Thunder’s four-game winning streak in the series. Russell scored 21 points and hit five 3-pointers while teammate Malik Beasley had a team-high 24 points and six treys. The two were big cogs with rookie Anthony Edwards going 3 of 14 from the field while scoring only nine points. Karl-Anthony Towns (COVID-19) is on the trip but is expected to miss his 12th straight game. Oklahoma City figures to be without leading scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (knee) for the third straight game. He averages 21.8 points and also leads with 6.3 assists per game. Al Horford stepped up on Friday with a season-best 26 points and he also contributed eight assists and seven rebounds. Hamidou Diallo, who missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, had 16 points and a career-best 10 assists. Diallo has scored in double digits in eight consecutive contests and will again play a big role with Gilgeous-Alexander and fellow guards George Hill (thumb) and Luguentz Dort (knee) all sidelined.

San Antonio Spurs v Houston Rockets

Toyota Center | 12:00pm AEDT

The Houston Rockets will be without rising star Christian Wood when they host the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. Wood injured his right ankle during Thursday’s 115-103 victory over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies and was slated to undergo an MRI exam, and an injury timetable has yet to be provided. Wood has been superb in his first season with the Rockets with averages of 22.0 points and 10.2 rebounds. John Wall scored 22 points against Memphis but he is listed as questionable due to back spasms. The Rockets have won seven of their past eight games. Saturday’s matchup marks the lone home contest in a seven-game stretch for Houston, which split two games in San Antonio in mid-January. The Spurs rallied from a 16-point, fourth-quarter deficit to post a 111-108 home victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday for their fourth win in the past six games. DeMar DeRozan poured in 30 points and added eight rebounds and six assists. Dejounte Murray had 15 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season but is listed as questionable with an injured left ankle. LaMarcus Aldridge (hip) will miss his second straight game. The contest will be the first road tilt for San Antonio since Jan. 20.
