Houston Rockets v Charlotte Hornets

Spectrum Center | 11:00am AEDT

The Charlotte Hornets vie for their fifth win in their last seven outings when they conclude a homestand against the Houston Rockets on Monday. Charlotte answered a modest two-game skid with a 119-97 victory over the Washington Wizards on Sunday afternoon. Terry Rozier scored 26 points and Gordon Hayward added 25 for the Hornets, whose 68 rebounds versus the Wizards tied the franchise single-game high set versus Houston on Dec. 20, 1991. Rookie LaMelo Ball had 19 points and seven rebounds while making his fourth consecutive start. Ball remained in the starting lineup with Devonte’ Graham sitting out due to a groin strain. The Rockets have answered a season-high six-game winning streak with losses in two of their last three contests. John Wall scored 27 points and Eric Gordon added 26 off the bench in Houston’s 111-106 setback against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. Gordon has scored at least 20 points in each of his last four games. Christian Wood, who averages team-best totals in points (22.0) and rebounds (10.2), is considered week-to-week with a right ankle sprain. The Rockets, who sport a 6-6 record on the road, begin a stretch of five of the next six games away from home.

Cleveland Cavaliers v Phoenix Suns

Phoenix Suns Arena | 1:00pm AEDT

The Phoenix Suns will look for more success on a challenging seven-game home stretch when they face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday. The Suns are 2-0 on the homestand so far, but still have games against the Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets upcoming. The Suns earned a 100-91 victory over the Boston Celtics on Sunday as Mikal Bridges had 19 points and Devin Booker added 18. Booker also had 11 assists. Point guard Chris Paul ended up with 15 points and two assists. The Suns have started welcoming fans into home games, with a small crowd of 1,493 on Sunday. The Cavaliers went 1-3 on a run of four consecutive home games and are now on a five-game road trip. They dropped back-to-back games against the Milwaukee Bucks, falling 124-99 on Saturday after losing by 18 on Friday. Andre Drummond asserted himself on offense Saturday with 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Collin Sexton and Darius Garland had 17 points each. Cleveland’s Kevin Love, who has not played since Dec. 27 because of a calf injury, might make his return during the trip. He has missed 22 consecutive games but was working out on the court before Saturday’s game.

Washington Wizards v Chicago Bulls

United Center | 12:00pm AEDT

The Chicago Bulls will try to defeat the Washington Wizards for the third time this season on Monday when they open a three-game homestand. The Bulls posted a 115-107 victory over the Wizards in Washington on Dec. 29 before recording a 133-130 win two days later. Zach LaVine, who averaged 22.5 points in those contests, erupted for 39 points in Chicago’s 118-92 victory over the Orlando Magic on Saturday. Denzel Valentine sank four 3-pointers to highlight his 20-point performance against the Magic. Valentine was playing in place of Lauri Markkanen (shoulder), who is averaging a team second-best 19.1 points per game. While the Bulls have dropped five of their last seven games, the Wizards have lost seven of their last nine after a 119-97 defeat against the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. NBA leading scorer Bradley Beal answered a seven-point performance in Washington’s 122-95 loss at the Miami Heat on Friday with 31 in the loss to Charlotte. Beal scored 29 and 28 points, respectively, in the first two meetings with the Bulls while Russell Westbrook averaged 21.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.0 assists. Westbrook had 12, 11 and nine, respectively, on Sunday to fall just shy of his sixth triple-double of the season.

Minnesota Timberwolves v Dallas Mavericks

American Airlines Center | 12:30pm AEDT

After snapping a six-game home losing streak Saturday behind a career-high matching 42 points from Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks will try to string together successive home victories for the first time since Jan. 9 as they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night. Doncic steered Dallas to a 134-132 win in its most recent game, adding 11 assists and seven rebounds. Kristaps Porzingis also notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards. Winners of just two of 12 games on the road, Minnesota will try to close a five-game trip with a bounce-back victory. After yielding 83 points in the first half of Saturday’s game at Oklahoma City, the Timberwolves shined defensively after the break and had the opportunity to tie the game on a layup with two seconds left, but Naz Reid’s attempt was no good, and the buzzer sounded on a 120-118 defeat. Reid paced Minnesota with a career-best 29 points, including 21 in the second half, while Jaylen Nowell (16 points) also established a new career best. Minnesota was shorthanded, playing without Jarrett Culver (sprained left ankle), D’Angelo Russell (sore right quad), and Karl-Anthony Towns (health and safety protocol). Dallas’ James Johnson (left knee soreness) also was out Saturday.

Golden State Warriors v San Antonio Spurs

AT&T Center | 12:30pm AEDT

The Spurs have a healthy backcourt. The Warriors have Stephen Curry. They will duel on consecutive nights in San Antonio, beginning Monday. After having missed 18 games with a fractured toe, Derrick White made his first start of the season for the Spurs in Saturday’s 111-106 win at Houston. He had 14 points and sidekick Dejounte Murray 11. The Spurs have won two in a row and five of seven despite missing LaMarcus Aldridge, who has been ruled out of this series with a strained right hip flexor. Murray had 22 points but Aldridge just four when the Spurs were drubbed 121-99 at Golden State last month. San Antonio shot 4-for-33 on 3-pointers that night. Curry made four threes and the Warriors 15 in total in that win, which included a 20-point performance by James Wiseman. He’s currently sidelined by a sprained wrist. The Warriors had one day off after a pair of track meets at Dallas, one that they won (147-116), one that they lost (134-132). Curry had 57 points — his second-most this season — in the latter. The Warriors have alternated wins and losses in their last six games, just as they had one win and one loss in three of their previous four NBA-style double-headers.

Milwaukee Bucks v Denver Nuggets

Ball Arena | 1:30pm AEDT

In an attempt to get back on track, the Denver Nuggets will be put to the test again with a home matchup Monday against the Milwaukee Bucks. The Nuggets have lost two consecutive games and three of their last four. Their only victory in the stretch ended the Utah Jazz’s 11-game winning streak, but the Nuggets went on to lose to the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. Nikola Jokic is doing all he can with a career-best 50-point effort in Saturday’s 119-114 defeat at Sacramento. Jamal Murray (knee), Gary Harris (adductor) and Facundo Campazzo (knee) did not play. Jokic was 20 of 33 from the field and added 12 assists with eight rebounds. The Bucks enter on a four-game winning streak after taking consecutive games at Cleveland to start a six-game road swing. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds in an easy 124-99 victory over the Cavaliers on Saturday. Khris Middleton added 20 points for Milwaukee while Bryn Forbes made all six of his 3-point attempts and scored 18 points. The Nuggets won at Milwaukee 127-115 on Jan. 31 of last year, then Denver earned a 109-95 home victory March 9, shortly before the season was paused because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Toronto Raptors v Memphis Grizzlies

FedExForum | 12:00pm AEDT

The Toronto Raptors are set to continue their six-game road trip Monday as they face the Memphis Grizzlies, a team they’ve defeated seven straight times, including in each of their past two visits to Memphis. Toronto fell to 2-1 on the trip with Saturday’s 132-121 loss at Atlanta, where the Raptors had won their previous six games. Chris Boucher (29 points), Fred VanVleet (22) and Kyle Lowry (20) paced the Raptors as their three-game winning streak ended. OG Anunoby has missed six straight games with a strained left calf, but coach Nick Nurse said Saturday the team is “shooting for maybe the last part of this road trip” as a target for his return. Lowry is 10 rebounds shy of passing Amir Johnson for fourth on the Toronto franchise list. The Grizzlies have dropped three straight on the heels of a seven-game winning streak and are coming off Saturday’s 118-109 loss at New Orleans. Returning from a five-game absence related to COVID-19, Jonas Valunciunas had 23 points in 24 minutes, while Kyle Anderson and Ja Morant complemented a balanced attack with 21 and 16 points, respectively. Grayson Allen chipped in eight points after missing four games due to the pandemic, while Brandon Clarke was out with right calf soreness.

Oklahoma City Thunder v Los Angeles Lakers

Staples Center | 2:00pm AEDT

The Thunder get not one but two rematches from an earlier home shellacking when they visit the Lakers for a two-game set that tips off Monday night. The Lakers were firing on all cylinders in the earlier win, with LeBron James going for 26 points and Montrezl Harrell 21, while the club shot 17-for-37 on 3-pointers. The Lakers have won four straight, but that’s not even the bad news for the Thunder. LA has swept all three of its previous same-opponent, same-site sequences, dispatching of the Spurs, Grizzlies and Rockets, all on the road. The Lakers needed two overtimes to outlast the Pistons 135-129 on Saturday, with James (33) and Anthony Davis (30) combining for 63 points. The Thunder will be playing their third consecutive two-game set, having split with both the Rockets and Timberwolves after losing on the first night of each. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander returned from a two-game absence due to a sprained left knee to pour in 31 points in Saturday’s 120-118 home win over Minnesota. Luguentz Dort also returned from a knee issue to contribute 10 points, but the Thunder lost Mike Muscala to concussion protocol late in the win. The former Laker, who had 22 points before leaving Saturday’s game, is questionable to play.
