San Antonio Spurs v Atlanta Hawks

State Farm Arena | 11:30am AEDT

The San Antonio Spurs will aim to reverse their recent struggles against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday as they begin seven-game road trip. San Antonio’s three-game winning streak ended Tuesday in a 114-91 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Rudy Gay had 17 points and Trey Lyles added 15 to lead five Spurs in double figures. LaMarcus Aldridge (right hip soreness) missed his fourth straight game, and coach Gregg Popovich said this week the team will re-evaluate Aldridge in the coming days. Atlanta has lost four of five, with its latest defeat coming Wednesday in a 118-117 loss at Dallas. John Collins scored 33 points, while Kevin Huerter chipped in a season-best 23. Clint Capela grabbed seven rebounds, as his streak of collecting at least 10 boards ended at 19 games. The Spurs lead the all-time series against the Hawks 55-40, but Atlanta has won two straight after earning its first sweep of the season series since 1996-97 a year ago. Trae Young keyed both victories, scoring 16 of Atlanta’s 38 fourth-quarter points in the teams’ first meeting of 2019-20 while tallying 31 points in the second game. The Spurs will be away from home as the AT&T Center hosts the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

Oklahoma City Thunder v Denver Nuggets

Ball Arena | 1:00pm AEDT

The Oklahoma City Thunder are likely thrilled to see a different opponent when they visit the Denver Nuggets on Friday. Oklahoma City is 0-2 on its three-game road trip with both setbacks coming in overtime against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday and Wednesday. Al Horford scored 25 points and Kenrich Williams added a career-best 24 on 11-of-14 shooting in Wednesday’s 114-113 loss. Horford is averaging 21.7 points over the past three games. Shea Gilgeous-Alexander (knee) sat out the contest and he will miss the Denver contest as well, marking his fourth absence in six games. The Nuggets have prevailed in 11 of the past 13 meetings after Oklahoma City won the previous nine. Denver racked up a season-high point total in Wednesday’s 133-95 drubbing of the Cleveland Cavaliers and is 1-1 on a four-game homestand. The rout also halted a three-game slide. Veteran Paul Millsap celebrated his 36th birthday with a season-best 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Michael Porter Jr. broke out of a slump with 19 points after scoring in single digits in four of the previous five contests. Nikola Jokic contributed 12 points and 12 assists for his 23rd double-double of the campaign. Gary Harris (groin) will miss his fifth straight game.

New York Knicks v Washington Wizards

Capital One Arena | 11:00am AEDT

Bradley Beal leads the NBA in scoring this season, however the high-octane star will be a spectator for the first time this season on Friday when the Washington Wizards host the New York Knicks. Beal, who is averaging 32.8 points per game this season, will be given a rest after scoring 24 points on Wednesday as Washington opened a five-game homestand with a 137-115 setback against the Toronto Raptors. Fellow former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook returned from a one-game absence to score 19 of his 23 points in the second half versus the Raptors. While the Wizards have lost eight of 10 home games this season, the Knicks have dropped seven of their last 10 contests overall following a home-and-home sweep by the Miami Heat. That includes a 98-96 setback on Tuesday in a game in which Derrick Rose scored 14 points off the bench in his first game with the Knicks since being acquired in a trade with the Detroit Pistons. Julius Randle, who averages team-best totals in points (22.3), rebounds (10.9) and assists (5.8), had his way with Washington last season. He averaged 25.5 points and 9.8 rebounds in four games, however the Wizards won three of those contests.

Detroit Pistons v Boston Celtics

TD Garden | 12:00pm AEDT

The Boston Celtics look to build off the momentum of their latest victory when they host the Detroit Pistons on Friday night. Semi Ojeleye made six 3-pointers to highlight a career-high 24-point performance in Boston’s 120-106 win over the Toronto Raptors on Thursday night. Rookie Payton Pritchard also connected six times from beyond the arc for the Celtics, who made a season-best 20 shots from 3-point range. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum combined to shoot 8-for-27 from the floor and 1-for-7 from beyond the arc on Thursday, however the duo fared well in the previous two meetings with Detroit. Brown averaged 28.0 points and Tatum 26.0 to help the Celtics salvage a split against the Pistons last month. Detroit dropped its fifth decision in six outings with a 111-95 setback versus the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. Josh Jackson scored 18 points off the bench for the Pistons, however Jerami Grant was limited to just nine following a dismal 4-for-17 performance from the field. Grant had 32 points in back-to-back games prior to Thursday’s contest. Grant scored 24 points in Detroit’s 96-93 win over Boston on New Year’s Day and added 22 two days later in a 122-120 setback.

New Orleans Pelicans v Dallas Mavericks

American Airlines Center | 11:30am AEDT

The Dallas Mavericks strive to match their season-best, four-game winning streak when they host the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. Dallas is 3-1 on a seven-game homestand and has put together three straight wins since losing the opener. The latest solid effort was Wednesday’s 118-117 victory over the Atlanta Hawks as Luka Doncic recorded 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his seventh triple-double of the season. Jalen Brunson scored 21 points for his second-highest output of the season. Tim Hardaway Jr. provided a late-game boost by scoring 13 of his 16 points in the final stanza. The Mavericks swept four games from New Orleans last season, including victories of 46 and 21 points. The Pelicans had a four-game winning streak halted when they lost 129-116 to the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. New Orleans allowed Chicago to make a franchise-record 25 3-pointers while losing the opener of a four-game road excursion. Zion Williamson scored 29 points and he is averaging 24.8 points and shooting 67.6 percent (46 of 68) from the field over the past five games. Brandon Ingram scored 21 points and has tallied at least 20 in six consecutive games and 13 of the past 15. Ingram was just 6-of-19 shooting against Chicago.

Orlando Magic v Sacramento Kings

Golden 1 Center | 2:00pm AEDT

The Kings get a breather from a tough schedule when they host the short-handed Magic on Friday night. Sacramento has won seven of nine, with the only losses in the bunch coming at Miami and Tuesday night at home against Philadelphia. The 119-111 loss to the 76ers culminated a seven-day stretch in which the Kings also faced — and beat — the Celtics, Nuggets and Clippers. De’Aaron Fox has been the offensive catalyst, averaging 31.6 points and 9.0 assists, shooting 51.7 percent, in his last five games. He had 16 points and 10 assists when the Kings used a balanced attack to win 121-107 at Orlando on Jan. 27. Nikola Vucevic had 26 points in the loss, while Evan Fournier chipped in with 25. Fournier has since missed three in a row with lower-back pain, while the Magic also played Thursday night at Golden State without Aaron Gordon (sprained ankle), Markelle Fultz (knee surgery), Jonathan Isaac (knee surgery), Cole Anthony (strained shoulder), Michael Carter-Williams (sprained foot) and Al-Farouq Aminu (knee rehab). The Magic then lost first-time starter Frank Mason to a groin injury during a hard-fought, 111-105 loss in which Vucevic (25 points, 13 rebounds) and James Ennis III (17 points, 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles.

Cleveland Cavaliers v Portland Trail Blazers

Moda Center | 2:00pm AEDT

If the game is in the balance late Friday expect the host Portland Trail Blazers to get the ball to Carmelo Anthony against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Anthony scored 17 fourth-quarter points Friday, and 24 overall, as the Trail Blazers put together an impressive 118-114 home victory over the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia 76ers. Portland trailed by as many as six points in the fourth quarter before Anthony powered the rally by going 6 of 8 from the field over the final 12 minutes and hitting 3-consecutive 3-pointers. Damian Lillard added 30 points as the Trail Blazers have won four of their last five games. Even at 36, Anthony has played on consecutive nights three times already this season so he figures to be part of the gameplan Friday. The Cavaliers have lost five consecutive games, including an embarrassing 133-95 defeat at Denver on Wednesday. The Cavaliers played far better Monday in a 119-113 loss to the Phoenix Suns, actually holding the lead with less than three minutes remaining. Cleveland’s leading scorers — Collin Sexton, Andre Drummond and Darius Garland — all were held to single-digit points against the Nuggets. Since winning consecutive games against the Brooklyn Nets last month, the Cavaliers have lost nine of 11.

Los Angeles Clippers v Chicago Bulls

United Center | 12:00pm AEDT

The Los Angeles Clippers will try to beat the Bulls for the second time this season when the teams meet Friday night in Chicago. The Clippers won the first matchup 130-127 on Jan. 10 in Los Angeles, where Kawhi Leonard led the team with 35 points on 14-for-22 shooting. Zach LaVine scored a game-high 45 points for the Bulls that day, but it was not enough as the Clippers outscored Chicago by 10 points in the second half to secure the victory. This time around, the Bulls are coming off a 129-116 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Chicago set a franchise record with 25 3-pointers in the game, and LaVine and Coby White became the first teammates in NBA history to make at least eight 3-pointers in the same contest. The Clippers also are seeking back-to-back wins after rallying for a 119-112 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. Leonard scored 36 to help the Clippers fight back after falling behind by 13 points in the first half. Patrick Beverley returned after missing the previous eight games because of a knee injury. He scored six points and grabbed three rebounds as the coaching staff limited his playing time as a precaution.

Memphis Grizzlies v Los Angeles Lakers

Staples Center | 2:00pm AEDT

It has not been smooth sailing of late, yet the Los Angeles Lakers still will take the NBA’s longest active winning streak into a home game Friday against the Memphis Grizzlies. The Lakers have won six consecutive games with the last three coming in overtime against sub-.500 teams. The Lakers needed two overtimes Saturday to get past the Detroit Pistons, then went one overtime each in defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday and Wednesday. The last two victories came without Anthony Davis (sore Achilles) and he continues to be listed day-to-day. LeBron James had 25 points in Wednesday’s victory, including a 3-pointer to tie the game in regulation and a key defensive play in overtime to seal it. It is just the seventh time in NBA history a team has won three consecutive OT games. The Grizzlies ended a four-game losing streak Thursday with a 130-114 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. Kyle Anderson, a UCLA product, had 27 points in the victory, including six of the Grizzlies’ franchise-record 23 3-pointers. Dillon Brooks added 20 points and Ja Morant had 15 points and 11 assists. The Lakers won a pair of games at Memphis in January and have won five of the last six meetings.

Milwaukee Bucks v Utah Jazz

Vivint Smart Home Arena | 1:00pm AEDT

Two of the hottest teams in the NBA go head-to-head when the Bucks visit the Jazz on Friday night. The clash of titans will be a rematch of a 131-118 Jazz win in Milwaukee on Jan. 8, a game where Utah buried the Bucks in an avalanche of 3-pointers. Royce O’Neal (six), Mike Conley (five), Jordan Clarkson (five), Donovan Mitchell (four) and Bojan Bogdanovic (four) combined for 24 threes and the Jazz shot 25-for-53 overall from beyond the arc in the win. Conley (10) and Mitchell (seven) also combined for 17 of Utah’s 31 assists on a night when the Jazz shot 50.5 percent from the field. The triumph ignited a run of 16 wins in the last 17 games for the Jazz, whose only loss in the stretch came Jan. 31 at Denver. They have rebounded to win five straight, including 122-108 at home over Boston on Tuesday. The Bucks have won 11 of 16 since the earlier meeting. They had a five-game win streak snapped in a 125-124 loss at Phoenix on Wednesday. Giannis Antetokounmpo put up a season-high 47 points in the defeat. He had 35 points and Khris Middleton 31 in the earlier loss to Utah. Milwaukee was outscored 75-39 on threes in that game.

Minnesota Timberwolves v Charlotte Hornets

Spectrum Center | 11:00am AEDT

The Charlotte Hornets hope to regain their footing after a recent misstep when they open a five-game homestand against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday. The Hornets recorded five wins in a seven-game stretch before dropping a 130-114 decision to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. Terry Rozier made 12 of 17 shots to finish with 34 points and Miles Bridges added 15 points and 10 rebounds to notch his third straight double-double. Gordon Hayward, who averages a team-best 22.6 points per game, had 29 in his lone meeting with Minnesota last season while playing for the Boston Celtics. The tumbling Timberwolves have dropped three in a row and 19 of their last 23 games, however there is reason for optimism after Minnesota sustained a 119-112 setback to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. Karl-Anthony Towns collected 18 points and 10 rebounds in his first contest back following a 13-game absence due to a positive COVID-19 test. Towns erupted for 37 points in the Timberwolves’ 121-99 victory in Charlotte last season. Malik Beasley, who had 28 points in a 115-108 setback to the Hornets in the other tilt last season, scored all 21 of his points in the second half on Tuesday.
